I missed something fundamental here ... does this operate with the shifter in D? In other words, have you programmed D shift points to replicate what you would do in S mode for the same speed, rpm and throttle position? So if you move the lever to S mode, you still have full manual capability (well, as manual s S mode allows). Does ECT do anything anymore, or revert to factory ECT shift settings. Thanks ... from an electrically and SW challenged old-school ME.

    a bunch of mods

No, this operates only with shifter in S mode. When you first shift into S, the controller is turned on this will perform the S+/- shifts by itself unless told not to. You can basically tell it not to by performing a manual shift with the control lever at any time. If you do that, it will cancel the microcontroller-control, and revert to standard S mode where you make the shifts manually. It can be turned back on by shifting back to D (turn it off), then back into S again. It does not function at all during drive D.

ECT still works as stock. This does not affect the stock shift mappings at all when you are in D, normal or ECT.

Good job OP. I am happy with the stock setup. I like the early shifts but good for you for taking the initiative to do this.

Very impressive work OP. That's a clever and seemingly safe way to solve the problem. Thank you for the raw data graphs as well. The curves look very consistent with how my truck shifts in D and how I shift it in S mode. I'm guessing I'd be quite happy with your system. Enjoy the fruits of your labor!

As for Toyota, they need to implement a transmission mode system like most German cars. They can keep their current programming and call it "ECO", use programming similar to the OP for "NORMAL", and then have an "ECT" mode for towing. A simple selector switch on the dash would suffice and lead to much better owner satisfaction.

Got it - thanks. Essentially now 3 shift maps: D, D+ECT, and S personalized to your preference.

If I'm reading it right you're correct, except that you still also have regular S mode if you initiate one shift yourself. If you just go to S and leave it, then it operates on the new set program.

So... did I miss something? How does it actually call for the shifts? Through the OBD port, or is it somehow hooked up to the shifter wiring itself?

Neat idea, though! Honestly I'm happy with the shift points on my 2.7, but I would probably spring for paddle shifters just because S mode is awkward for me.

I get confused as most real sequential gearboxes are not upshift-forward. You yank back to upshift... ...

wait, can I easily switch those wires?!?!

    I do not think OP said where in S mode he shifts to , S4 ? S5? S6 ? He just said S .

I'm not interested because I have a manual, but props to the effort and intelligence that went into the project. It's truly impressive.

I wouldn't worry too much about liability. That's what LLCs are for. If you act in good faith, regularly transfer the money out of the LLC to keep the LLC virtually broke, and don't mix your personal finances with the business money it should protect your assets just fine. They exist to protect people like you and allow you to bring things to market when you would otherwise be too fearful to put your personal assets on the line.

Very, very cool. I'm amazed at people's intelligence. I wish that I had an engineering brain but, alas, I've got a finance brain.

Seriously awesome job. I haven't minded the shifting on my 2017, but would still love one. If you go the LLC route, I'll be the first customer!
