Transmission- 5 Speed automatic write up with pics for second gen 4 liter trucks

I just checked my 2013 double cab TRD sport 4x4 and the fluid was low I had the light on for check A/T lvl and pulled the check plug and a little big came out and then nothing.

 

I get a little hesitation when putting it in drive or reverse, also i get a weird down shift at around 40 mph. How much damage are we talking here?

 

Is your trans full of fluid ? That would be the first thing I would look at considering we dont know your mileage

 

No I just checked it and a little came out but it wasn't a drip by any means 57,000 miles.

 

Forgive me if there is a better place to ask this, and I DID scan through all 4 pages of this post, although I didn't read every single line... Also, I am NOT experiencing any transmission issues at all.

I need to know if this sounds right. Went to the dealer to get a quote for a transmission oil change. They used words like "World Standard", (yes, since visiting the dealer I did read the post about WS), and to change the oil they have to let the truck sit overnight to cool down, hook up some kind of warmer to it so it get's 90 something degrees, then use a computer to put the oil in, good for 100k miles, blah, blah, blah... and wanted $250 to do the tranny oil change.

I've done some automotive work in my 57 years, and never heard of doing this! I thought it would be a simple drain, flush (yes, I read that too), (or for a better term, evacuate the old oil out of the system) then refill it. (which brings up the question, how do you fill it AND include the external cooler?)

I'm not sure WHAT transmission I have, (I have an 05 pre-runner SR5, double cab, 1GR-FE 6 cylinder engine, 5 speed automatic, with tow package, 106,000 miles).

Are they giving me a straight deal here? Is it that involved? OR is this something I can do myself (again, not shy with tools or talent), in my carport? Or were they quoting something for a manual transmission?

Thanks for the reply. Apparently the dealer wasn't misleading me. I'm 99% sure I can do the job, but sadly my physical condition & lack of time come into play. Guess I'll cough up the $. My biggest concern is that they don't flush the cooling radiator & only drain & fill. At 106K miles I would like all of the fluid replaced. I will attempt to clarify what I expect them to do.

Was wondering if a UltraGauge can be used to verify the tranny temp? (Mine does register tranny temps)

Toyota A750E/F with Multiple Solenoid Circuit Faults
Toyota Tundra, 4Runner, Tacoma, Sequoia and FJ Cruiser equipped with the A750 transmission may exhibit a complaint of multiple transmission solenoid electrical circuit faults set. Typically, to have multiple solenoid electrical faults indicates that there is a power loss or ground problems, possible compromised wiring harness (pinched, broken or melted0, or a connector is not plugged in all the way or completely disconnected. In this case, the cause may be, a bad weather pack seal on the harness side connector of the transmission case connector allowing moisture to corrode the male terminals and or deteriorating them. It is not uncommon to remove the external harness connector (female) and see the male terminals from the case connector, as shown in Figure 1, still stuck in the harness connector when this happens.



To correct this condition, replace the transmission case connector, which is part of the internal harness, and clean the terminals in the female external harness connector. Install a small amount of dielectric grease into the connector and a small amount of silicone sealant on the weather pack seal to prevent moisture.

Can anyone identify which solenoid is the SL2 (pressure control solenoid "B")? I need to replace this solenoid for a P0776 code but not sure which one it is?

I think I determined that (based off that picture) the panel is "facing to the left" as in the cirlce in the middle left side is where the filter connects, which would place the SL2 as the bottom left most solenoid.

I did PM him with additional info and waiting to hear back! hopefully he responds.

I also NOW need to know the SLT solenoid, since I think i want to replace both, since they each talk to one another in relaying the data to the ECM and I only want to pay labor once, not twice to crack the pan open to swap out. This is def a task someone could do in a garage but with moving in less than 2 weeks and a 3 month old baby, I dont have the time to tinker with this project as I'm boxing up a house and coordinating with moving companies!!!

Did you switch it out and what results did you have?

 

I swapped the SL2 and SLT solenoids with new OEM ones, changed the filter and drained about 5.5 qts and put new in. runs and shifts like a champ! so one of those things fixed it haha

 

That's awesome, Thanks for the update. Did you switch it out yourself or have the dealer do it? how much did it cost? Mine is at the draler this moment and they said they are removing the drive shaft tomorrow to see if that is the problem. Because the shutter was happening at the same point every time, I'm leaning to it being more a problem with the solenoid. Convincing them that is a hole different story. Thanks again.

 

my ultra gauge showed the pending P0776 code, which told me it was either the SLT or SL2 (both are utilized in the switching from 3rd to 4th gear, which is where mine was hanging up). I did have the toyota dealer verify on their machine the same code. Toyota told me they wont open the xmsn, only swap out a new one ($3000+) which I called bullshit on. I bought the two solenoids, OEM (203 + 223$$) and had a reputable xmsn shop replace it. it seems easy, but I was about to move from GA to WA and didnt have the time and my tools were packed already. It can be done in 2-3 hrs, really just dropping the pan and filter, swapping solenoids, and putting it all back together and filling the xmsn again).

parts were around 400, labor was around 250-300. i paid a 100 deductable with my 3rd party warranty and they picked up the rest after I spoke to numerous supervisors and explained in detail what they had no idea about how the xmsn works and how the code tells you that you dont need a new xmsn, etc etc.

Companies who rebuild torque converters will tell you the hundreds of times their converters are unjustly blamed for a problem. Anything from a no move condition to TCC shudder or slip. Not that there couldn’t be a converter problem like the wrong lining was used. But many times a closer look other than a converter is required.

Just ran across this thread. I am having the shudder problem in the 40-50 mph range. Taken to 2 different mechanics. First mechanic changed solenoid and torque converter plus changed fluid. Second mechanic (transmission shop) is reporting a low pressure condition and is recommending replacing the entire transmission. Should I need to do this or should I seek another opinion? Should I take it to the dealership? Any ideas on what I could have them check?
