Well as the title states, somebody hit my truck over the weekend. I'm not sure when our even what day, I noticed this morning. Saturday was most likely when it happened. How have those in a similar situation dealt with this. I do have accident forgiveness and have never filed an at fault claim. My deductible is 1000 on collision. I'm guessing there is 3grand worth of damage here. Just looking for insight/opinions on how to move forward. A police report is useless at this point as most businesses loop cameras every 24hr and I have no clue where or when it happened.

I am an insurance underwriter and see this all the time.

First, report it to the insurance company. There is a clause in your insurance policy that requires timely reporting so that the insurance company can do a proper investigation. If enough time passes that they can't properly investigate, it will nullify your coverage.

Second, don't hesitate to file a claim for fear of it impacting your rates. You can always decline to accept the payout if the total ends up being too low to justify accepting. Let the insurance company investigate and run numbers and then you'll know whether it's smart to take the check or close the claim.

Third, hit and run claims like that aren't collision claims. They are comprehensive claims. Comprehensive claims often have a lower impact on premiums than collision claims and they aren't usually counted as at-fault.

Should be covered under uninsured or comprehensive. Collision insurance is only used when the vehicle in question was being operated.

Had a similar thing happen to me last year when I was parked in a shopping mall lot. Damage was to the drivers side rear panel, repair cost came out to about $1500.

If I had a $1k deductible, I'd be prepared to drive around with some dents in my truck.

Not sure what the business is but from my experience with bank security, we had to keep a MINIMUM of 6 months video for each branch. I don't know what the said business is but never hurts to ask, they will probably have at least a week or so on file.

True, I think when I was hit in WalMart it was several weeks they saved. The problem I ran into is they wouldn't release the footage to my insurance.

Try to file a police report, it will help get any videos from businesses if they are reluctant to release it, get your insurance on the ball, and if your rates start to jump, shop for new insurance.

I was required to file a police report when my car was hit. The damage was very minimal but still had to be done. Some insurance companies might be different. They took the report over the phone.

Thanks for the insight guys. Claim is started, once they followed up I'll know where to go from here. As for whoever did it, I'm a firm believer of karma, they will get what they deserve. I'm not stressing over it, just wanted to hear others experiences.

I had a hit-and-run on the last Tacoma I had and the front bumper/headlight needed to be replaces. I did an insurance claim and they fixed everything but a few years later when I tried to sell my Taco, this minor accident showed up on Carfax and deterred a few people from buying my Taco. This was a minor accident, maybe a little more than a $1000, but it did show up on Carfax. Something you may want to keep in mind.

For someone who underwrites insurance, either you work in a state with some whacky insurance laws or you are completely mistaken.

First, typical statue of limitations for property damage claims is typically 3 years from the date of loss.
You don't need to report it immediately, the only way they wouldn't cover it is if it was outside that window.

Second, non-fault claims do not effect your rate. There's no reason to not have them pay the difference above your deductible. Unless you just want to spend more money.

Third, a hit and run claim is not a comprehensive claim, it is a collision claim.
    A non-fault collision claim.
Comprehensive claims never any impact on your premium and neither do non-fault collision claims.

When I submitted my hit-and-run claim, I asked if this was going to raise my rate and they said, in California, my rate could not go up because of this.

But when I received my next insurance statement my rate did go up. I called them about the rate hike and they transferred me to their underwriter dept. They said the rate increase was due to "regional impact fee" or something of that nature and that living in Southern CA had higher car thefts, traffic, ect. and they had to increase the rate accordingly.... kind of a coincident that they added this fee right after I made my claim though.

I was going to find another insurance company, but even with the price increase, my insurance rate was still a lot less than the next insurance co. quote I received.

That's pretty standard, they do that, has nothing to do with your claim, more to do with the cost of doing business.
I've had no claims and still seen a premium increase

Typically "uninsured motorist coverage" covers this. I just make the call and the insurance covers it.

EDIT: Because I didnt read all the responses, I repeated everything everyone else said.
