Good plan. The thickest kydex I have right now is .08" because I use it for sheaths and holsters.

ok so this might fall under the camping side of things more than backpacking due to the weight, but does anyone use or have any experience with a wool field pant? im wondering how theyd hold up with general trampsing around the woods against briars, and other snagging things. the type stuff im thinking about is like the wool army pants or these. everyone says tough, but I feel like they would still snag on things like crazy.

I love wool! It has some pretty good competition nowadays with newer synthetics. If your going to be dealing with any moisture I wouldn't go with wool, but in dry and colder climates it does really well. I have a lot of Filson clothing, and love it but prefer the woolrich pants. Wool is pretty rugged in regards to brush and briars. I use it mostly in brushy applications because nothing is as quite as wool in the brush (maybe fleece).

ok so good to hear an actual review. yea the only time id be wearing them is if it were below freezing so everything would be "dry" ive just never had wool pants so I ive got no clue how theyd hold up in the real world. ill check out the woolrich ones too then. curious though, why do you prefer the woolrich over the other choices?

Woolrich has a better variety, they have some that are a little lighter wool which makes them easier to hike and move around in. I wear some thin Patagonia bottoms under them and they offer plenty of movement. The Filsons are thick and almost feel like they bind or limit movement, they do break in a little over time though. I think the woolrich are a little cheaper too, even their heavy weight options? Either are good options!

    yeah

The filson is 100% virgin wool and the woolrich is a blend, if that matters? Probably a main reason why the filson feels different? the woolrich is softer and less dense

Actually, wool has excellent moisture wicking properties and is now used in many clothing applications as a substitute to synthetics. The natural lanolin oil on wool makes it much more waterproof than synthetics while holding in heat. In hotter climates, there are many lightweight wool options (merino wool) that keep you very cool.

Ever got wool pants wet? It will hold water and dry really slow. Merino wool is different.

Yosemite photos (not mine) from this morning.
The long bridge is Swinging Bridge. Normally you can walk under this one with plenty of clearance.

I don't wear heavy non-merino wool, so I don't have experience with it.
