Houston area (along with DB's not from Houston) BS thread

I grew up in Houston and loved it, still do though I go to college in Oklahoma at the moment. As Chad stated, the traffic is bad so living close to work is really important.

Actual Houston (normally central Houston, or the West side from down town - towards Katy) is extremely diverse. I live near I-10 and Beltway 8 and of the six homes next to me, 4 of them are of different ethnicities than I. Food is phenomenal, you dream it you can find it (I'm assuming just like San Francisco).

Weather is pretty meh, really humid most of the year but winters are surprisingly nice. The summers are extremely hot, so is most of spring/fall.

Crime isn't bad at all depending on where you live, the Woodlands is probably the least crime-ridden place but the diversity is hella sad. My area of town also has low crime .

The affordability is highly coorelated to school districts, like Chad said a comparable house one mile from another in a different school district is typically half of the price. A less-expensive house is probably in an area with worse (but still not bad) schools, or in a higher crime area. A house in a really good district will probably set you back anywhere from $500k to a million. Apartments in that same area would start at around $1k a month for a one-bedroom. That being said, the housing market in Houston is way more stable than those markets in metropolitan California.

Overall I'd live in Houston if I had a job there, but like we said before LIVE NEAR WHERE YOU WORK. You think California traffic is bad, this is as bad if not worse. I was in LA for a few weeks and it was fairly comparable.
