So am I really the only one that's gonna ask... if they aren't trash, why do you store them next to the dumpster? Because here in New England pallets are basically trash, even hardwood pallets. They put them by the road and hope someone will take them. If I were to see a pile of them stacked near a dumpster I would not even think I was stealing them.

they're pretty handy when building mountain bike trail features (drops, berms, etc). fairly easy to come by around here.

Any time you're taking something from someone else without asking, it's stealing, no?

If a transient comes to my house on garbage day and goes through my recycling can, that's considered theft as well. It's in my possession until it's transferred to the garbage truck, then it's theirs.

Sitting next to a dumpster makes no difference, not everybody has a big enough yard to give pallets preferential placement when other things need to be here or there for various reasons, and certainly most warehouses don't have the interior space laying around for pallet storage.

    Theft is theft.

Well, true, but still seems a bit reckless to store pallets by the dumpster if they are valuable.

Regardless of their location they are stored on private property and are not free for the taking.

i see your point. and if it's one of those things where you just drive the back of an industrial building, and they're next to a dumpster, i wouldn't think anything of it, either. hell, pretty sure i've done that a time or two.

Sorry to hear of this theft. I read through the entire thread and definitely learned something. Like many have mentioned, pallets are easy to come by here in central PA. What I learned through this thread is the cost of these to certain businesses.

Two years ago I picked up a few pallets from a local business who said I can take what ever I wanted. Though I asked them for permission first. I used these to build a coffee table for my living room which turned out pretty kick ass by the way. But a complete pain in the ass to tear those pallets apart just for the boards. The positive side, the coffee table will be around much longer than me.

I would never take something unless I asked the owner first. But on a related note, living in the city where I do, if I want to get rid of something fast... I just sit it outside the back fence in the alley behind my house. Shit disappears quick back there.

There are a lot of cool ideas to be found on Pinterest that you can build from used pallets. But you need to think about what those pallets were used for. Do you really want pallets that were used for moving chemicals to be re-purposed for your bed, couch, bar, or coffee table? Probably not.

Nope, just weathered shingles, house was built in 1693 so nothing on or in it is straight or square.

Nothing worse than a thief, sitting next to a dumpster or not. Good luck!

They probably were used in a bonfire, so you can expect flat tires as well.
