Only thing I don't like on the 870 is the location of the safety. I like how the 590 is on top that can thumb slide. Can visually see it better.

Anyone know a good gunsmith in the Benicia/ Concord area? I have a crusty 1911 that could use some love. Could do it myself, but I probably won't.

Colt Combat Elite, Pachmayr sights, ambidextrous safety, oversized clip release, wrap around grips, aftermarket trigger & tail, competition bumpers on the clips... great for shooting beer cans and waving around to let people know I mean business.

There's some corrosion on the slide and body. Snow camping incident 10 years ago. Stupid soft case...

A good cleaning too. I've cleaned it before, but it's been a while. So the work would mostly be cosmetic and general maintenance.

There's a metric fuckton of refinishing options on the market today, would require it to be stripped and cleaned anyway (not sure how much corrosion you have).

For that you'd be better off sending it in for refinishing rather than local work, and you can ship via FFL rather easily.

That's my issue, and why the Mossberg would probably have been a better fit for me, as a left handed shooter.

What DCSBFTMFW said. The best gunsmith I know is in Granite Bay. There are some around the Bay Area, but the ones I know suck. There may be some I don't know, so it's possible.

I had one as a neighbor until last year when his shop burnt down.

Trained by the late, great Scott McDougall.

I'd feel worse for him if he wasn't such an asshole. Didn't have fire insurance, lost all he had.

Who is your Granite Bay smith? I have an old 1917 SMLE .303 I need to have cleaned and inspected, especially for head space to see if it is even safe to fire. It also had been soaked in preservative at some point, and that needs the be cleaned, which seems a lame, laborious task from what I've read about it so far.

You can put it in a black trash bag and close it up, let it sit outside under a summer sun and it'll sweat out a lot of the cosmoline.

    Still sucks ass, though.

These guys did some Factory Recall work on my Remington 700. And I have heard from others that the gunsmith has done good work for them. There are no guarantees these days. Some good. Some bad. Simple stuff anyone can do. Complicated stuff, might be best to send to the factory. They seemed real personable. No bullshitters. Treated me well. I got a good sense they knew stuff.
