If you want a short barrel for a truck gun then just do a pistol build with a brace and don't shoulder it ;)

So what makes the difference between a pistol lower and a rifle lower?

The rifle has a stock on it and the pistol has an "arm brace" or pad on it.

Basically any rifle with a barrel shorter than 16 inches (can be 14.5 with a pinned flash hider) is considered a sbr. However you can have a pistol with a barrel shorter than 16 inches but can't have a stock to shoulder it. Theres a few other things that you can't have one that you can have on the other but that's it in a nutshell.

Yeah, that's the one... Best 308 battle rifle IMO, better than an AR-10 even.

So In CA we have that bs bullet button, is it truly that easy to install a magazine release? just buy the small kit? or is there other ways that aren't so illegal. (Currently building my first AR)

I believe it's just a buffer tube allowing you to have a shorter barrel as a stock isn't on it so it's considered a pistol.

To have a pistol lower you either need to buy a complete lower that is in pistol configuration (Just a buffer tube or brace on it vs a stock) or have a stripped lower that has never been assembled before as a rifle (With a buttstock).
You can build a stripped lower as a pistol lower (Using just a buffer tube or brace) and then convert it to a rifle lower (Simply by adding a buffer tube with stock) and convert it back to a pistol configuration (Just a buffer tube or brace), however you CANNOT build a rifle lower and then convert it to a pistol lower.

If you build a lower receiver with a stock and then put just a buffer tube or brace on it it is still a rifle lower, the lower receiver MUST be built in a pistol configuration first if you ever want to use it as a pistol.

Yes, it is extremely easy to install a normal Mag release, I installed one in my dad Colt LE6920 after he moved out of state.
You will need the mag release spring and button, the piece that holds the mags in should be the same as a non BB piece.

However instead of installing something like that you would likely be better off installing something like the RADDlock where you can quickly and easily convert it from Cali-legal to Az/NV fun mode.
I'm not 100% positive they are still legal in Cali as I recall hearing about a bullet button ban but that's what we used when we lived out there and it was legal then.

Thanks man! I think I'm going to go with the mag release. Don't plan on registering mine anyway. A lot of damn sites seem to be sold out though :/

If I built a striped lower in rifle configuration first and then converted it to pistol configuration who would ever know
