Wiring up some LED strips in my shell today. Got 16ft of led strips, 12v battery, switch, and wire. $100. I'm hoping the results are worth it!

You can run power from the truck instead of the 12volt

If you run the power from the truck battery you should be able to turn the lights on without the key in the ignition.

Do I run the risk of draining my battery at all if I sleep in the back and use the lights for a few hours?

Yes and no. Being LED they will draw a very small amount of power. You could drain the battery doing this, but unlikely. If you've ever been to a drive in movie you're using your battery to power your speakers for 1-2 hours and that will use more power than the led lights. Only thing is if you're out camping and have a dead battery that's a lot worse than being in a crowded parking lot with a dead battery.

Totally. That's my only worry. The battery I got is 4"x4" it's not too big. I plan to build a sleeping platform with storage underneath anyway so I might just put it in a little compartment. The only thing that sucks is how much the LED strips cost but it seems like that's the best way to get good lighting in the truck.

Talk with @tacodane about his kits he will hook you up and if you plan on running lights and are worried about your battery you could do a 2 battery system or throw a battery in the bed with you not hooked up to anything and just run your leds off that

Voltage minders... they look at battery voltage and shut off power before it drops too low to restart vehicle. We use them on our trucks for the lift gates...

If you can dream it up, the racing or commercial communities probably already use it

No. Leds pull such little juice.
Do you know how many watts per foot the tape light is?

1990 Geo Metro is what I had. Blue. With a white hatchback. I couldn't kill that thing for the life of me. Wish I still had that 3 cylinder piece of daily driver gold.

I lived too far away from high school to even ride a bike. There was only one high school for the entire city. I actually didn't want a car back then.

I can give you a dozen reasons why taco Dane is not a guy you want a kit from. I suggest going with anti-dark or @mattgecko if a kit is what you want.

Also, Cali raised makes rock lights that you can get in all white which you can use for bed lighting. Those strips when exposed to elements, from what a few people who have used them told me, turn brittle and break after a couple years or so of exposure to the elements. Go with the kc cyclones or the Cali raised lights and be done with it. Imo.
