Would you trade an old 2nd gen for a newer 2nd gen?

Thoughts?

I know its essentially the same truck but would you jump into one with 100K less miles and toyota certified or just keep it rolling?

A 2013 T/X Baja just popped up at a reasonable price and the thought obviously crossed my mind for a minute.
Never see baja's around here.

 

Lots of people do it. Especially since most 'mods' will transfer over.

if the price was right, but then again I only have 29k miles on mine.

 

If you don't trade up to a newer 2nd gen, you will eventually be faced with accepting a troublesome 3rd gen.

 

just did recently myself, mostly due to increase in family size. found a 2011 dclb in the same color with 100,000 less miles then the 2006 ac and transferred all the mods and have been extremely happy. I am really enjoying having a rear facing camera to help backing up with the increased wheelbase length.

Depends on how well you've maintained your truck... and how well the replacement was maintained (or how severely its been abused). Also depends on what its going to COST. The age difference could also come into play, for instance, if yours is a 2010 or older and its about to rot a big hole through its frame, then you might want to hang on to it since you're about to get a brand new frame for free, which will also increase the value of your existing truck, which means cost you less to make the upgrade.

Now if your "older" truck is a 2011 or newer, then no word on frame replacements, and very probably won't ever happen. So a 2010 or older *could* actually be worth more to keep than a 2013.

 

You know... this is so badly perpetuated.... my buddy and his DCLB TRD OR 4x4 and my dad with his DCSB TRD OR prerunner have had zero issues with their 3rd gens. Stop spreading missinformation.

 

I have an 05 with a new frame already and everything else is spotless.
I told myself i was going to hang onto it for another year. But im itching to throw money at it for some refresher mods.

 

I don't think it is a horrible idea. If yours is starting to feel roached out or something, and you want something with less miles. It is somewhat of a parallel move but 2nd-gens are awesome trucks. Especially if you aren't the type to want the 'latest and greatest', then I'd say it isn't a bad move.

 

I basically did this 1.5 years ago on purpose. I sold my dad my 2011 DCSB, and purchased one of the last 2015 DCSB's just to hopefully avoid purchasing a 3rd generation. IMO, best decision I have made in a while wrt vehicle purchase.

 

100,000 miles difference is a lot, like others said if you can afford it I'd do it. But...it also depends on whether you still owe money on what you have and if you'll have car payments or not. If you're paid off and your current trucks in good working order I'd think long and hard about whether you want to have a car payment again.

 

I would absolutley, only thing that would stop me is the air injection pumps on most of the 12 and up 1GR models. Those suckers are expensive, and my 2009 doesn't have one! Other than that, hell yeah. Just don't lose money doing it.

 

All things being equal, I wouldn't mind trading up to a newer 2nd gen. They come with so many more "creature comforts" like back-up camera, new stereo deck and steering wheel controls, electronic LSD, and I really like the new facelift (I don't remember if traction control came standard on all Taco after '09). Also, as with any new vehicle generation, the 05's had their bugs to work out, so I would hope Toyota figured most of it out with the newer model 2nd gens.

 

If your current truck is an '05-'08, then yes.

 

Really depends on what you want... more money in your pocket or a newer truck? Just be honest with yourself. Either answer is fine.

All things considered (taxes, fees, depreciation, repairs, payments, etc.) it's really a stretch to ever think you're going to come out ahead by buying a newer vehicle. 99% of the time the cheapest vehicle to own is the one already sitting in your driveway.

 

09 brought a lot of standard equipment, I think that 09 and up have backup cam and traction control standard and I know my 09 was wired for sat radio so if you don't have it it's an easy add-on.

 

The whole starting over with payments thing is a theoretical kick in the nuts.
