Central VA just got it's first snow and this event brought out our new 2016 Taco Sport 4x4. Question - the truck seems to bind when in 4 wheel drive when turning sharply at low speeds. Almost a hesitation or creep. Seems fine at speed and no problems backing or anywhere else. We haven't even gone in for our first service yet but just wondering is this something that all of them do or should I make my way for service sooner than later.
I appreciate any and all comments

Normal. Don't make sharp turns in 4wd unless your wheels have room to slip. When turning in a sharp radius, your front wheels will turn at a higher rate than the rear.

That is normal in a turn. Thats why the manual says to only use 4wd on snow and dirt (not pavement). When you are in a turn, all 4 wheels are turning at different speeds. So something has to give.

I think something "gave" in mine when I had it in 4hi this past weekend. Have a knock in the front left suspension, very reminiscent of the sound of a bad CV joint. No handling issues, no grease or oil leaks but very prominent knock, mostly when turning right at any speed. Never remember turning on dry pavement but I have feeling this new knock is a result of what would happen if you would. Service isn't scheduled until next Monday. :bananadead:

Normal for certain. Just avoid sharp turns when there is not enough snow to allow a wheel to spin.

OP rule of thumb, dont make the sharp 90 degree turns in 4x4 (of any make or model). Like the others have said, it "binds" it up.

It is safe to turn at 90 degree intersections just make it sure to go slower and make it a gradual turn. Not a sharp one. You can do some serious damage taking turns too sharp in 4 wheel drive. I try to only turn the wheel "half way" at most (and only in extreme situations)

Thanks to everyone! I seem to remember my old Izuzu Trooper doing a similar thing but that's been a ton of years.

This is why AWD is superior for 100% on road winter driving

When the truck is in 4WD and you make a sharp turn on a high traction surface, the wheels bind because they ARE turning at the same speed. NOT at different speeds as they should to avoid binding.

If you are on a low traction surface in 4WD, the wheels still turn at the same speed, but because traction is low the tire slips on the surface instead of binding the drivetrain.

Not that anyone but myself care but, now that it has gotten above freezing here my "knock" is gone. Whatever was knocking has melted and life is good again...for now.

I find that when it has been cold with snow, then some brief melting, ice will foemail in strange places. This can cause some loud knocking sounds. Happened on all of my trucks.
