Made the cert list for the BLM ranger position. Boise based but I have to clarify if I would stay in Boise or if they would send me to cali after the training is over.

 

Certification/Hiring list. They categorize individuals in groups of best qualified, least qualified, not qualified, etc.

The best qualified list is sent to the hiring manager so I should be expecting a interview, unless I am the only veteran on the list.

 

He gets the job over anyone else bc he served his country.

 

Non-competitive hire. They will either do the paper work to disqualify me, or offer me a job without a interview. They tend to call and make small talk just to ensure I'll be a good fit but it's not a interview.

 

Especially for state/govt jobs....they always say they take care of their own. My brother was hired for being a vet over another guy which is cool even if it was for a manager position at washingtons largest pot farm haha

 

It's a nice benefit but can be rather unfair. For example, as long as i minimally qualify for a position, I will automatically go ahead of the most qualified person. There are ways around this but it is unfortunate when you watch it happen to someone else. My girlfriend had issues with getting her job back because a veteran applied for it, even though she was the only person qualified for it (job description was literally written for her).

That said, people complain about it both ways. Veterans feel like they deserve a job they didn't get and others automatically blame veterans when they don't get referred. In most cases, its their own fault and they need to improve their resume/test scores. Plus at a certain level, vet preference doesn't work for science based jobs. I can only use it to get my foot in the door and then I am "equal" to the other applicants. Which is why I am being very selective about my positions and choosing only those that have a promotion potential of gs-11 (need a masters and experience to get). That way I can quickly climb the system without returning for further education.

Yep, taking the GRE in april and plan to continue my education but I am going to work a year or two before.

its fuckin bullshit man. I can't believe in the last 4 years how much it has been brought up to sell off public lands and now its so close to happening. Its depressing.

 

Hell I'll write into that. The state land transfer is a big deal everywhere out here.

Also Monte I'm taking pointers from your pvc wiper fluid thing. While x ray vision is handy it will be nice to actually be able to see out of the window again
