I checked the glove box and no joy. Didn't think about the space behind the rear seats. First thing tomorrow morning! Thanks for tips guys.

I only got one key for my tailgate lock. The dealership cut me a second key for free.

My 2017 Tacoma TRD Off Road came with two Smart keys and two manual keys for the tailgate and door lock.

Same basic shit everybody else had 5 years ago.
Unless I missed something reading quickly through the thread.......if I did my bad, but the key that pops out of my key fob locks my tailgate.

I have a 2017 sport and the key that came in the fob will lock and unlock my tailgate. I do it all the time. I don't know why everyone else's doesn't work?

2017's the key inside the fob and the tailgate are the same now. 2016 they are different

This is good to know. I hate things in my pockets so getting rid of one more key on the keychain makes life a little bit better.

I was annoyed by this and installed a Pop-and-Lock this past weekend. Best $110 mod so far. I have a 2016 so the additional key was getting annoying.

I found that the Toyota key, with the big fat plastic head was annoying me, so I had my 2nd T/G hey (2016) cut at Canadian Tire for $2.50. That key did not have all that plastic crap on the head.... then I cut the head down and ended up with a key that looks like this...
I don't even feel it in my pocket with the FOB now.....

Not sure why someone said no to this, the key in the FOB DOES work with the tailgate. At least in my 2017 it does.

Glad they got it right along with the power sliding rear window in 2017.

Yeah, it makes soooo much sense.... they gave us '16's 1 key and we had to cut more... the FOB key could have been used, but it took them a year to figure that out..!!

I bought my 2016 Taco certified pre-owned and they never gave me a key for the tailgate lock. I called the dealership where I bought the truck and they said they were able to make the key based on my truck's VIN number. They are mailing me 2 keys that they'll cut. Hopefully this will help someone else in that situation.
