TPMS Sensor....WTF??

Recently I had new shoes put on my truck. Now my TPMS light is on. I went from 265/70/16's to 265/75/16's, and still have the stock wheels. They also filled the tires with Nitrogen instead on regular ole air. The light has been on ever since I picked my truck up from them. I've tried to reset the light myself and it came back on. Took it back to them, and they said they can't get it to reset either. They said that one of the batteries might be going dead on the sensor itself, and that it would be $125 to replace. Anybody have any ideas?

Did you check tire pressure in your spare? It should have a TPM sensor too.

Is the light on solid (low pressure) or flashing (TPM fault.) I would think that a sensor that had a dead battery would show as a fault. That said, I don't even know if the Toyota TPM sensors have batteries and how long they are expected to last.

If it happened when they were putting tires on, I would suspect it could be damage that resulted from the tire installation.

Lastly, are you sure you are performing the reset correctly? You might look for instructions on this site as I have heard the ones in the manual are not clear.

 

Fill up all tires including the spare to the same psi, then hit the reset button according to the instructions in the manual. If that doesn't do it, have the Toyota dealer try re-setting it... they can scan the sensors and tell you if one is bad. If that's the case, take it back to where you had the tires replaced and have them fix the one they broke. Do the sensors even have batteries?

Found this online. Still doesnt solve the issue, but tells me that they might....or might not have a battery.

i have a sport with the 265/65/17's. I changed my tire is to 265/75/16, my light isnt on. And my spare tire is still a 265/65/17. I thought for sure it would come on

you have to make sure that all 5 tires (4 + spare) are inflated to the same pressure. see post #2 here http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/wheels-tires/50450-another-tpms-question.html on how to reset it if you're too lazy to look it up in the manual.

 

I had the tires changed on my Taco when I first got my 2008 Tacoma. When I got in my truck to leave the light was on. I refused to leave until they got the light to go off. Come to find out they had broken a sensor when breaking the tire down off the rim.

The light went off right after they went to the Toyota dealership and bought a new sensor and replaced the one they had broken.

I bet you the same thing happened to you.

 

Not all of the 2nd gen have sensors in the spare.

 

Sorry to sort of thread jack but my question is also about the TMPS.

I recently had a flat so I put the spare on. I'm still running on the spare and my flat tire is on my bed. The light will stay on until I get a new tire for the flat one, right?

 

They probably broke one of the tpms mounting the tires.

 

Something to make sure of whenever you have work on your tires done is to take it to Toyota and have them run a scan of the sensors to make sure that they all work. Also make sure that you let the Tire Shop know that you have TPMS and that if they are damaged in any way they will replace them. Most of the ask now days.

Correct! Make sure that they check the TPMS on the flate before they put it back on your truck. They are really tough devices but they will break in certain circumstances especially with a flat.

 

Good advice. Also many shops have a notice posted in the service area that they are not liable for sensors if they should become damaged during tire installation. Be aware if this is the case with your independent shop when you schedule.

Alright I got one for ya, I put 35in tires on my truck, my light is on, still have the spare under the bed for now. How can I get the light off? Fill up the spare? Is there a fuse I can pull?

 

The tire pressures have to be the same, so unless you can safely put the same amount in the spare, you'll have to disconnect it (or put black tape over it).
