Do you need to know, or care?
Bed tent, roof tent both work great. Plus eye patch if scared of what's creeping out there. Just playing with you OP, you could also try a bed extender and lower the tailgate for some extra room. Are you using a topper? With window open and tailgate extended, you could fabricate something between tailgate and open window on your topper.

I don't get the roof top tent thing. I think it's like some type of Tacoma bro camping offroad thing that I just don't "get." If you want to sleep in a tent it's more economical to buy a tent that fits in a small roll. Pitch it and throw a cot or inflatable mattress in it and be done. It's still a fucking tent.

Bed tents seem like a massive pain in the ass to me. Having to unload all gear PLUS spend time setting it up, and then reversing everything to pack up? Sounds like half the day wasted screwing around instead of drinking beer and eating meat.

If you don't want a RTT for whatever reason, get the best, quickest-setup ground tent you can afford and enjoy.

It take 5 minutes maybe 10 max to pitch a tent if you have half a clue. It doesn't sap 3mpg like having a pallet strapped to the roof of your truck. It doesn't impede clearance for tight trails. I think people just like shit hanging off the top of their truck. Makes them feel like they're rolling around in their tactical special forces camping offroad tacoma.

RTTs with a proper mattress are supposed to be incredibly comfortable. Some protection from small animals, bugs, etc. is also nice. If I had the clearance for it (parkade), I'd rock a hard-shell RTT for that super simple 20-second setup. Plus, the sleeping bag and all that would already be in the tent, which makes things even easier.

Since a RTT is not a practical option for me, I recently got an OZ Tent RV4, as well as a cot (w/ mattress) and another extra mattress that goes on top. Very, very comfortable setup. I haven't used it in the wild yet, but I figure from the time I park, to a fully set up, staked-out tent, and "finished" sleeping area I should be under ~7 minutes.

Tons of room for more people and my dog. Tons of room for gear. Nice awning (and I'll get walls for it soon) that makes a great hang-out area if the weather is bad. Can stand up in it fully. Going to be camping in luxury :)

Heh. Honesty, RTTs are a cool novelty item that everyone wants to have. I think that's really all there is to it. Most of the soft-shell RTTs look like a huge pain to setup and use (at least from the setup videos I've watched online). A hard-shell RTT is the only one that makes any sense to me, but these come with a $3000-5000 price tag.

Guess it depends what kind of camping you're doing. Bed tents are cool in theory but, like others have said, you have to unload all your shit, set up the tent, and then sleep. I'd rather pull whatever gear I need from the bed, camp on the ground, and then throw everything in the bed and head back home to repack/clean/organize everything when I get back.

It's tough. Sometimes my feet get chilly walking to the bathroom in the middle of the night!

The only positive is you're off the ground. I'd rather have a tent trailer.

Nice she looks pretty big. I wouldn't want to tow more than my Aliner up to the rim. Truck was screaming at 4000rpms to keep 55-60mph much of the way up in 3rd to 4th gear.
