What aspect of the 4runner are you most looking forward to gaining? It seems like you don't want to take the hit and that you do like the truck. To hell with the 4runner, enjoy the truck.

The problem you run into there is when it comes time for sales tax on the new one, it would probably equal out with the trade. Might be better off throwing the stock stuff on and selling all the upgrades.

Speaking as someone who makes horrible vehicle purchase decisions with my dad's money, trading in a 3 month old vehicle seems like a loosing deal.

But I also purchase things that make me happy, so add 5-6k to the price of the t4r and if you think it's worth that, then go for it.

If someone would give me 35k for my 2017 Trd off-road with technology package ect it would be gone. This is the worst truck to drive I have ever owned. I had a 2015 f150 3.5 ecoboost I sold to buy this thing. Worse mistake I ever made.

Do you need to know, or care?
    :rofl::rofl::rofl:

How many post who bought truck and have regrets? It's an epidemic.

Word of advice for those who are simple minded, there is this thing you can do at dealerships called "Test Drives". It's where you go to dealer and take out new truck and drive it around town, on highway, maybe on some rougher roads, and decide if this is the vehicle for you. They do not charge for this "Test Drive", they want to sell you this vehicle for profit. If not the vehicle suiting your needs, walk away and visit some other dealers and repeat same "Test Drive". Could save buyers remorse. Or buy vehicle without said "Test Drive" and sell later for thousands less.

Then post on here that vehicle is POS, and that 2-1/2 Gen is the worst Toyota product ever. I'll respect that, but I'll be the only one on this forum.

Tacomas hold their value after a few years, not after a few months. I don't care what car you buy, if you sell it less than a year's ownership, you're going to lose a lot.

I drove a 2016 for the weekend and really didn't notice the issues mine has. Mine shifts to 5th at about 30mph if your not really getting after it. Then it bogs the motor down then you mash the gas more and it down shifts once or twice. The damn power steering pump makes the engine rev up 300 to 400 rpms in drive through that's so aggravating the truck pure surges it's a battle to keep this week bitch at 60 mph to say the least. Rant over

For the record, I love my Gen3. No bashing here. It's been a great truck. We have two dogs and my wife thinks the 4Runner would be a better vehicle for our needs. I have to admit when she gave me the thumbs up to buy the PRO, I decided the Tacoma should go.

Does the GEN2 feel a little torqueier, maybe but not worth fretting about. The Tacoma is a nice truck.

OP. Good post because I've seriously thought about doing the same. I was originally looking at the 4runners and only test drove the Tacoma because I had never driven one and the dealer didn't have a PRO or TEP on the lot. (49yrs young). I fell in love with the truck on the test drive (all 10 miles/no CC) and wrote the check. I still love 99% of the truck but that dam 4th gear grab when going up a 1% grade with the CC on gets my goat. Ya I'm old...
I've only had mine 6 months and hope Toyota or someone comes up with a fix. The short term fix is to just jump in my superduty when traveling 100+ miles.
    Life is short.. Enjoy it

Put it on craigslist and be patient. Do not trade it in. That is the best way to get ripped off. I sold my rubicon for 31k cash money. It took 3 months but trading it in the best I was offered from any stealership was 25k. The rubi costed me 38. It had 100k on it. So mods do help sell it to the right person. Dealerships could give a rats ass until they acquire it then they sell it braggin about the added features you've done to it to the next buyer.

    It's a 3rd Gen.

The 2nd Gens at two years old with 60k miles were selling for $2k-$3k less than brand new ones (before 3rd Gens came out). So I bought new.

Now I'm seeing 2nd Gens selling for near their new prices because the demand is still high (some folks don't like the 3rd Gens).

Vehicles always depreciate. And your biggest hit is typically right when you drive off the lot. That's the hazard of buying a new vehicle that you don't actually want.

You're talking about the problematic 3rd gen.

Just like you, there are an overwhelming number of used abandoned 3rd gens from unsatisfied owners, just waiting for buyers, which suppresses the resale value of the 3rd gens.

ECT is your friend if you want to change shift points. For me, I've learnt how it differs from my Gen2 and adjust accordingly. If you want to keep gas mileage up a little (and yes, it's only a little over the 2nd Gen) leave it with ECT off.
ECU will try to keep truck around 1000rpm to save fuel, push ECT and it drives more like 2nd Gen. Worse for me is the 30mph range, truck feels bogged down, but I've learnt that's what it will do and adjust driving accordingly.

If you plan on modifying the 4Runner, get the SR5 Premium or the trail. Doesn't make sense to pay 10K more for the pro when the only thing you are keeping are the wheels and grill.
