You should come up here - they're all over. Had 3 standing 5 ft from the house eating birdseed off the ground that fell from the feeder yesterday and then looked out my den window this morning to see one standing in front of the garage door.

    Congrats on the deer, Gary!

    Thanks Mark and Carl.

My son from Salt Lake City is coming in Tuesday night and stay until the 16th. Hope he gets a buck.

Youngest son is coming from Chicago the first few days of Feb. and hope he gets one too. He will get to use his .270 here but cannot use rifle in Illinois.

Good luck to both of them!
Just thinking, how far are you from Moulton AL, I was in the service with a guy from there and recently had a long catch up phone conversation with him.

Carl I believe Moulton is in North West Alabama but not sure.

I live in Mobile on the Gulf Coast between Pensacola, FL and Biloxi, MS.

Was 25 here this morning and supposed to be 77 next Saturday.

The 6.5 Creedmoor is a relatively new cartridge by Hornady based on a shortened .308 case like the .30 TC. Ballisticaly it is very similar to the .260 Remington and 6.5 Swedish Mauser. The big appeal is the high B.C. 6.5 projectiles making it popular with long range crowd with long barrel life, low recoil, and lower cost to load. Of course long barrel life is no issue for us hunters.

Your 6.5 Rem magnum takes advantage of these same .264 cal bullets. i think you might really like some of the Hornady ELD-X hunting bullets which are accurate and flat shooting.

I can't load the 140gr Hornadys because they have to be seated too deep in order to fit in the magazine of the 600 and 660's, don't know about the 143's, but I would assume that I would run into the same problem with them.

I agree about the C.0.L. problem and you are right the 143 is long.

Had a Rem. 700 Mountain Rifle in 7mm08 which was wonderfully accurate with 140 gr. Ballistic Tips loaded long but they would not fit in the magazine. Could load 1 in the box, hold it down and put one in the chamber which made it a 2 shot rifle. Traded it to a friend who had a new Mountain Rifle in .280 Rem. and it being a standard (long) action I could seat the 140 grs. long and they fit fine. Still have the .280 with a Vari X III 3.5 X 10 X 50 MM Leupold mounted and it is one of my favorite rifles.

I guess Remington just made the ammo box a little short on the short action models.

Have the same problem with my Kimber 84M in .308 that I loaded some Berger 168 gr. VLD for. Had to seat them deeper than I wanted to fit the magazine which due to their profile gives them a little too much "jump" before entering the rifling. I can use those 168 Bergers in my Rem. S.S. 30-06 with no problem.

The 143 gr. Hornady is being used in a Savage Creedmore which is built on a long action so no problems with cartridge length.

Just curious, does your .280 Mountain rifle have the regular mag., or the detachable mag.?

It has the detachable box mag which I really like. Mine is the blued with walnut stock. The 7-08 Mountain rifle I had came with a hinged floor plate which is better than a blind mag like my 700 ADL in .270 had but I still prefer the detachable mag.

The Mountain Rifles are what sent me down the road of lighter rifles as I got older. Lugging my 700 Varmint Hvy Barrel in 22-250 through the woods gets old quick. It is my most accurate rifle using 52 gr. Flat base Berger bullets. Will not stabilize heavier bullets like my AR because it has a 1-14 twist. My AR is 1-7.

Just as an aside, the 6.5 Creedmoor is 1-8.

    Some really cool shit
I can attest to the weight. I have the same rifle in .308. 1-12 twist. I tried to make it into a long range rifle. Having trouble hitting anything out past 200 yards. Really got me perplexed. I can hit a dime at 100 yards.

Here you go Gary and Mark, and any other reloaders on here!
My buddy loaded 70 gr. Hornadys in his .223/5.56 AR 15, and they shot really well. He just figured out that those bullets are .227 diameter and not .224, there is only 1 caliber that uses that diameter bullet, a 22 Savage High Power. Now he's trying to find a load that shoots well out of it, but it's shooting a pretty large group and he's wondering if shooting those oversized bullets could have damaged the barrel.
I went on the puter to see what I could find, and he's not the only one who bought those same bullets by mistake. He's talking about buying a new upper, I just gave him some of the loaded bullets that shoot decent out of mine to see what they shoot like in his gun, different twist though, his is 1:7, mine 1:8.
Wondering if his could just be heavily copper fouled, just need to find the right load, or damaged from shooting those oversized bullets, any thoughts?
Glad he didn't give me any to try before he found this out!

    Hi Carl.

    How was your hunting season?

Nice try Dave ... Not yet anyway. :p If the darn truck don't start this evening ... I will get even.

1°F in my backyard currently. Forecasted subzero again tonight and through the weekend. I'm ready for a dose of warm when we visit the kids/grandkids in PHX ... 17 days to go.

    :sorry: That's sad. :(

My group had 4 caribou tags; we managed to fill all 4, but the last 3 required a 90 mile one day round trip into the back country with multiple river crossings, from which the return 45 mile leg was made in a moderate to heavy snowstorm in the dark. Not our best plan ever  but it's a good story now. ;)

Our first time on that hunt/area. Next time we'll know where to go and plan smarter. :)

One of our group drew a late (Nov-Dec) season moose cow tag which he filled with his bow on the backside of Randy's property.

We also did well on our Copper River Salmon trip and both Whiskey Gulch Halibut trips this past Summer. Long story short, freezer well enough stocked to share with the kids and get us through to next year.

Since I retired from active duty, I mark my year by fishing and hunting trips, and visits to the grandkids. :D No complaints.

I would think that the same powder charge that is safe with a normal.224 cal bullet would be very much over pressure with a .227 projectile. A good place to start would to check the primers in some brass from the fired .227 rounds. He will likely find cratered and/or bulged or flattened primers indicating over pressure. There may also be brass markings on the face of the bolt.

As far as Mark and the .308 with 1 in 12 twist rifling, I believe that 1 in 10 is considered "normal" and would stabilize his projectiles at farther than 100 yards.

If Mark listed what grain bullet he is using I missed it. I think a 10 twist will stabilize most .308 bullets up to 190 grains.
