10 year old Hilux is worth half of what would cost you to get 95 Tacoma. If you want something you can trash around the trails but not much on roads, why spend money on Hilux - get old Russian military "jeep" which will be more capable than any Toyota. But if you want something dependable you can buy new the latest generation for 37+ dollars which will be worth half of that 3 years later. As for diesel, do you really want 110hp engine in your rig?

BTW it looks like Europe is slowly getting out of small diesel engines (common rail) as thy are smelly and very expensive to maintain. The newest 2.5l diesel in 2016 Hilux has only 150hp (same hp as in my 95 2.7l Tacoma) with worse gas mileage than my 5th gen 270hp 4Runner. No, thank you.

Yeah but almost double the torque of your 2.7L. The new diesel 2.5L will blow your 2.7L away. Apples to oranges though. Now if you don't like smell of it, fine. But don't stick to your 2.7L because you convince yourself the 3RZ is just as powerful. That Hilux diesel engine would leave the 3RZ in the dust. Now price and other factors included, I get it.

It is not fair to compare 2016 engine with 1995 technology. If you look at diesel engines mounted in 95 Hilux you will be looking at 91 hp with 139 ft·lb. The diesel engine mounted in the newest Hilux has still less torque and hp than 4l engine in new Tacoma with no benefit of gas mileage and all disadvantages of diesel fuel (cold start, high maintenance cost, stink).

But it is not a place for diesel vs gas discussion. The bottom line is that I decided to bring my "Grama" here not just because of sentimental value but because it just makes sense. I hope :)

I used 3 or so for last year. I need to treat mine again this year. Unfortunately it will wear off after about 6-8 months.

I agree, that's why I didn't say the 2.7L is more powerful than the diesel. Oh, so you were talking about a diesel Hilux from same vintage? Gotcha. Either way sounds like you're going over there about as best prepared as you can.

Only time will tell. My truck is still sailing somewhere over Atlantic, will arrive to port by the end of the month (if the container does not sink :)).

Now I learned, that the common method of stealing older cars here (for export to Russia) is to break out the fuel door and steal the lock. Then they would make the matching key which would open the door and turn on ignition (no chip in the key). So I'm planning of removing the lock from the fuel door and getting cheap locking fuel cap.

Seems like your taco is pretty sold and we'll maintained. Also sounds like you got all the help you need. I'll just leave you with a good luck and to keep the yotas rolling.

Like the location in my profile says "Was Golden State, now Poland" :). Waiting for the cargo ship to arrive somewhere by the end of the month. For now I'm Tacomaless. And because :worthless: I'm attaching the latest one I'm looking at while waiting (after installation of brand new BFG KO2 and just before the windshield replaceent):

Mistake? You mean living for so long in "Golden State" or moving to Poland? :D

That is the thing with Tacomas. I had 6 years old Mercury Sable that was literally falling apart, and I bet it was converted to cans for dog's food few years after I sold it to some poor soul (it was depreciating faster than paying off the loan).

Toyotas just don't want to die encouraging us to drive old, old cars. Look at the issue this way: we are still talking about buying and modifying 1st gen Tacoma when 5th gen is on the market. You can't do it with "normal" cars where as soon as the new generation shows on the market, the old one is obsolete and forgotten.

Thanks. I'll be visiting States mid summer so that would be a good time to buy spares. Some streets in my town are in really bad shape, (like you can almost do 4x4 trail through the city) so good suspension is a must (I'm taking 4Runner too).

Mos def dude, having the truck for that long I'm sure some suspension work is in order. I hope you have no issues taking the stuff on the out of the states.

I did full inspection of all suspension parts three months back and there is no slight sign of wear or tear. BTW besides shocks everything is still stock. I replaced shock few years back but that is all I had to do.
There is no need to replace perfectly working part just because if my fail in unknown future. This is why I love 1st gen Tacoma - it tells you what it wants, you just need to listen :)

Was it OEM or aftermarket (upgraded). I was under impression that OEM are pretty much bulletproof. But I can be wrong and really I wouldn't want to be corrected in "rough way"
