More power?? How!

I don't remember this many people complaining about the 1st or 2nd gen lacking bottom end power.

 

That's because the 2nd gen was a nice refresh from gen 1. And buyers were expecting a 1000% increase from 2nd gen

 

More people involved with the internet now a days. Also are society has shifted to the I want it now and I always expect more mentality.

Wow, this still holds true? I was a GM 15a tech doing everything from trim to HVAC back in the late 90's. We learned that GM had to meet some kind of quota for hiring physically challenged and lower IQ types to do wire harnesses and other mundane assembly processes. We did have to replace and repair lots of shorts and damaged wire runs throughout certain lineups due to the poor QC and placement of wiring over stamped metal gussets that were not deburred! They'd wear through after 15k+ miles. They're still bad from your friends experience?

 

I'm just here to see pics of the non-exhaust manifold or headers on the head of the 3.5. That seems interesting...

The 3rd gen Tacoma has more power than the 2nd gen Tacoma.

The 3rd gen Tacoma is faster than the 2nd gen Tacoma.

driveability, driveability, driveability. if this motor wrung out to 12k rpms and had 1000bhp i'd still want better driveability. but i understand that's subjective, and you are talking about the objective side of things. agree this thread is pretty confused... they all get so pretty quickly. i'm adding this since i believe the design of the motor's hardware may limit how much actual power can be produced, but bringing usable power down under 3k is probably do-able with a proper tune.

 

Driveability is fine once you learn how to work with the truck rather than against it. If you keep expecting this truck to drive like a totally different truck you have in mind, you're going to be disappointed. If you learn to work with the truck and un-learn your avoidance of higher RPMs, the truck drives great.

 

define great. i appreciate your opinion for your style of driving or what have you, but like i said driveability is subjective. i don't like how your truck drives, and none of your words will change that.

 

Define "don't like"? Are you going wide open throttle all the time and still lacking power? Or do you just wish that you didn't have to push the pedal as far or that the motor didn't sound like it does when you're accelerating at higher RPMs?

 

Sounds like your truck doesn't like the way you drive either. When we got our Subby Outback, I had to learn how to drive that. It didn't like to be driven like a car, and wasn't quite like my truck either. Once I learned to drive it, I enjoy it more. Even my new truck drives different than the 09, and I expected that, because it's different.

But hey it must be the truck right.

 

Maybe Toyota needs to start playing fake engine noises through the speakers like BMW. Except instead of high-revving engine sounds, they should just play slow-revving Diesel sounds. Do that and divide the tachometer numbers in half and a lot of complaints here would disappear.

 

My 2002 5 speed manual had pretty damn good low-end torque. Probably helped it weighed 700 lbs less than a new Tacoma but oh well. I miss driving that thing. Didn't feel like there was a computer between your pedals and tires trying to cockblock you at every chance it got.

There were just as many complaints about the 2nd gen when it came out, just like now lots of gen 1 hated the gen 2. Like you said bcrobbin, more voices heard now. Interwebs are loud....

I haven't purchased my Tacoma yet, but I don't understand why people are expecting this truck to compete performance wise with Raptors or other full size V8s? If you are buying a Tacoma with a V6 you should know what you are getting. It's not going to win a drag race. It's not going to pull a 5th wheel. It's also not going to get 30+ mpg. I understand people's complaints about the transmission to a certain extent - although I feel like this will be one of those engine/ transmission combos that gets better the more you drive it and it gets broken in. But 278 hp and 265 lbs of torque is not bad!

I currently drive a 2005 Jeep Liberty CRD, one of those small diesels that everyone says they want so badly. Stock it had 160 hp and 260 lbs of torque. It got decent mileage - usually between 22-30mpg. It also had a 12 second 0-60 time! I purchased a couple of ECU tunes from GDE that boosted the hp to 200 and the torque to 364 lbs. It was a noticeable difference in performance, but it still has a 10 second 0-60 time. It has also had many of the typical Chrysler issues that make you want to explode. I am buying a Tacoma because I want a reliable mid sized truck that holds it's value, not because I think it's a smaller Raptor. I'm expecting there to be a learning curve when I get my truck. It's not going to perform the same as my Jeep. Or an F-150. Or a Sierra. It's a Toyota. It's a relatively boring company that puts out relatively boring vehicles that last a long time.
