Actually the 3rd gen is faster 0-60 and pulls more and faster than the 2nd gen.
Why don't you understand that and get over it once and for all ?

Yes lol. I work on aircraft in the Coast Guard so I am not GM mechanic. I can only tell you that when I visit him he is tearing part the interior of some NEW car, chasing wires. He will then look at me and go, are you fucking serious while holding a wire schematic lol.... I then watched him several time changing out entire dashes from trucks due to cracking. He says it's under warranty and happens all the time.. The hell? We have been friends sense we were 12yo lol. We talk car and thus shit all the time. It's humorous. Unfortunately even with toyota or any company now, Whoever is the cheaper contract for parts will win the bid...Same shit in the military.

New 3.5 sounds like a Diesel lol, with the engine cleaning and direct injection it sounds a little like one.

You bring up a great point: As much as everyone likes to dream about the high torque numbers a diesel engine delivers, they don't realize that horsepower really is most important. The Colorado/Canyon diesel is a prime example here. The low-end torque peak and low-RPM nature of the engine fools a lot of people into thinking it's more powerful than the V6 Tacoma, when it reality it's significantly slower. I'm starting to realize that a lot of the people who complain here don't actually care how powerful their truck is or how fast it accelerates, they just don't want to hear the engine at higher RPMs for whatever reason. For those people, the slower Duramax is probably a better choice. For the rest of us, the V6 Tacoma is actually a decently powerful small pickup truck.

even better. I have friends on the island with the 3rd gen. I've done at least 100 miles in one. Gone up hills and everything. The thing sounds like a race car when the RPM's are up there haha

This is great- love the clarification. Do you know how much more power a supercharged 4.0 has than the 3.5? Couldn't find consistent numbers. Most superchargers are around 6lb because the engine would go boom, but still can't find any consistent numbers or dyno charts

It's ironic honestly. I was comparing it to the 2017 raptor. It's fair because fords 3.5L V6 in the raptor (same displacement) gets over 500lb of torque. They achieved this with DI, turbos, 10 speed tranny, and a less efficient tune. It's still V6 and same displacement. I'd never compare a V8 to V6 (apples to oranges).

I do get that part of it. They both have a 3.5L V6. But honestly do they have anything else in common other than they are both off road oriented pickups? The Raptor is a big, wide, full size truck. The super crew Raptor also starts at like $56k and some are priced north of $65k. Ford spent a lot of money to milk that type of performance out of that V6 and it's freaking amazing! But that's not what the Tacoma is... even the TRD Pro shares the exact same engine as all the other V6 Tacomas.

I do hope they (someone) develops a supercharger or a way to tune this Toyota engine - I would consider it myself, but since it just came out I think we all need to just be patient.

i like the list of cars you mentioned. The only one i was interested in was the ford ranger. Unfortunately they're saying it will come with an inline 5 diesel. On my island there are only 2 diesel gas stations -no go. I've had terrible experience with chevy/gmc and dodge. My hope was more to figure out what people are doing to pump up the power.
About simple mods- there isn't much to get the horsepower up. i could redo the headers and exhaust from them in order to try and increase displacement slightly and reduce back pressure - but that is a marginal upgrade. Cams and connecting rods could be upgraded (weight reduction) but the engine would need to be tuned and who knows the extra power from that upgrade.

Frontier with a Stillen supercharger, There's endless bolt on and tuning options for the 4.0L VQ.

This forum is so confusing. It's ironic how half the people say 2nd gen with a supercharger and the other half say 3rd gen is a lot faster if you push the throttle and use the HP.

i did some reasearch again to back up my thoughts. I fly to the mainland often and there's only 5 TRD off-road used tacomas (2nd gen) within 500 miles of my house. that's why i was more trying to workout what i could do with the new gen because there's heaps here

I love my 3rd Gen , I call her Lexus because she's sexy as hell with my mods!
The Tacoma has the best resell value and dependability on the market for a midsize pickup period! At 1st I thought they were ugly while still in my 06 OR but after I sat in the 16 Sport and drove it was love at 1st sight! High tech sexy bitch it is. Sure new technology especially drive trains may bother folks and in time this will all be patched with better TSB flashes or some ECU tuners. Be patient this is by far the best Tacoma to date. Just my 2 cents for what it's worth
And by the way my brother has a 2016 GMC Sierra and is afraid to do me in the 1/8 mile drag and he should be, this Taco will beat it if you know how to drive lol !

I certainly know from my toyota that you certainly can be quicker if you know how to work the throttle properly.
No ecu tuners are out to this date, right? I could only find gen 2 tuners
