trade in isnt representative of resale value. With trading it in you're allowing someone else to resell it, thus handing over that margin.

It's with all the accessories as it sits now. He said they don't really care about the accessories. He said since its in pristine condition and has all the add ons, he felt comfortable offering full trade in value based on excellent condition and he did factor premium wheels and oversized tires. I was expecting $32k. To be honest, he offered me $33,500 to start, but came up when I was ready to leave.

Its not the $36K you wanted, but if you are ok with the loss then it sounds like you will be good to go.

I have never once heard of CarMax coming up on an offer. Sounds like a good offer though.

He said the market for 4x4 trucks is good right now and they had no Toyota trucks on the lot. He felt confident it would sell on the lot.

OP, what is your tax rate where you are? If you were in California, you would be better off with the trade in deal because then you would only be taxed on the difference between the trade in and the new car. so if you trade in at $34k and the 4-runner is 40k, you are only taxed on 6k. something to think about.

I thought that was true until I was selling my'14. The hardest part is being sure the check they are handing you is legit. I was down to one guy I thought was serious and decided against it for the couple hundred dollars savings I would end up with. When you are talking only a couple grand difference between new and used then all you attract is a bunch of guys that want to low ball you. Unless you are selling a niche thing, which the OP is not.

    Sell me your mirror.

I'll ship you mine so you have one when you sell it back if you don't have your old one.

Resale value is still good. If they offer him 34.5 they will probably sell it for 36K- 37K which is close to what you can get a new one for with a bit of haggling.

That was in reference to a post by the OP mocking the resale value in an earlier post...

Resale value is still good on these, as well as the trade in you're getting. I sat in a 4runner and tundra when I got my tacoma, I wasn't planning on either vehicle just checking them out.. let me say they are beautiful on the outside, but it's the interior that I have to see constantly and damn are those two vehicles terrible with the dash layout. Just my 2 cents tho.

California? Nope, you pay tax on full price regardless of trade in. CA doesnt do trade-in credit to be applied to the price of new vehicle.

Hmm didn't you have that Tundra before, why the down grade to a 3rd gen?

Reason why I ask is b/c I'm pretty sure I've 've seen your IG account before.

Do it!! The 4Runner ain't no slouch.

Crazy man. How do you not think about a large purchase thoroughly over?

I thought about my purchase for 2 years, and it's not perfect, exactly what I want, but it's the best scenario for the time. I plan on driving mine for many, many years.

Be smart, and don't make unwise decisions. Be patient, then you won't have to be taking losses like this. Hate seeing people loose their rear ends like this. Good luck on your 4runner purchase. Keeeeeeepppp ittttttttt!!!!!

Yeah, depends on the state. AZ and NV are net trade in tax States.

Op, I would definitely check the tax value of trading in before just selling to car max. And I would strip it down to stock.

No. What made you think that?
The problem is who is walking around with $35,000+ in cash, and if they where, I wouldn't trust the cash to be real any more then a check. My intention was to go to the bank with a buyer and have the bank cut a bank check right in front of me. It's a big hassle when dealing that much money. My point was that anyone who has the money is just going to buy a new truck for a few thousand more unless you have something unique that can't be bought new. Buying used, a lot of times people will get a loan, then yes they have a check from the loan company. I wouldn't trust that unless it was cut in front of my eyes.

A nicer and rarer Tacoma equipped with a Manual Transmission would give you more resale value.
