ya know, if you are pulling it all the time
you want at least a v6

and if it's big rv you want a tundra

tacoma can pull things yes, but the 4banger is sort of a dog in rolling hills even when empty

a tab trailer or equivalent is all I would do with a 4banger + rv type thing

Yeah, definitely go with the V6 if you're towing anything bigger than a little teardrop or one of those tiny Scamp trailers.

I can't imagine trying to get 5 people and our shit plus a pop-up trailer into the Appalachians with a 4-banger, that'd take forever.

I tow a popup that weighs in over 2000lbs plus a bed loaded with gear and kayaks with absolutely no issues. If you stay under 3000 lbs, you shouldn't have any issues with the 2.7. Good luck with your decision.

2.7L is very capable of towing. The 4.0L makes it more capable. You're looking at the Pre-Runner (2wd with 4wd suspension.) the 4.0L will get very close to the same MPG with that setup as the 2.7L, just make it a little easier to speed up and keep up with traffic.

get the V-6 , had a 4 banger and the gas mileage is about the same but you have a ton more power with a 6 . I used to tow a 2285 Lance TT with my '15 Tacoma with a V-6 and tow package

Fuel consumption of the 4-cyl is 33% lower than the V6.
Contrary to the "you must V6 to tow a bag of mulch" clowns from the start of the thread, you won't have any issue with power.
While technically the tow limit on them is 3500 pounds (which is the same as a V6 without the tow package), when forced to, they WILL NOT complain about going VERY FAR over that. If the load is aerodynamically efficient, it wouldn't have any trouble pulling 7000 pounds through the eastern mountains. Now if the load is a non-popup camper that stands as tall as a big rig, or you're working at extreme elevations in the WESTERN mountains.... well, you might need a V6 for that.

I tow with a 4 cyl. Like others have said, if it's not a full high walled camper, you shouldn't have any issues. My camper loaded is approximately 2200lbs. Plus a couple hundred pounds in gear, kayaks and passengers and it pulls fine. Maybe not the fastest truck on the planet but it will surprise you with the manual transmission. It's all about proper gear selection. IMG_0077.jpg

You could improve efficiency a bit by moving the kayaks onto the top of the camper.

Thanks. I never thought about it as I run the rack year round and I always throw em on the rack without towing.
