I can respect that. It was a little bit of a general statement. There are a lot of variables. That was just a common number from my buying experience.

Advise. Due not pay more than you can afford without your girlfriend. Life changes. Can you afford an apartment and a truck payment on your own? If the answer is no, then I would advise against it.

I know housing can be crazy in some cities. Wasn't trying to brag. I explained my situation a few posts below the one you quoted.

$450, I hate car payments. This is the first one I have had in 7 years.

This is why when I pay off a vehicle I never stop making payments; instead of automatic billpay I switch it to automatic transfer to savings/investment instead.

In reality the only one who can decide if you can afford a payment is you.

Young inexperienced workers get let go more often than older experienced or licensed workers. So unless you carry skills that will keep you employed without any hiccups be cautious.

One last thing to remember is how long will it take for your payments to pay down your vehicle enough that your equity exceeds your debt. New vehicles depreciate as they leave the lot and take years to be worth more than what is owed. Even a huge down payment can vaporize into thin air if you had to sell your new Tacoma in a year or so. I put 30% down on my truck and I am pretty sure if I sold a month old I would be lucky to see much if anything back.

My advice would be get a good used one. You'd not only carve some off your payment every month, but it makes more sense as you mentioned having a work vehicle so it's not like you'll be putting all your miles on the truck.

I would first advise you to figure out what you could pay per month if you all of a sudden were the only income in your household and try to stay around there. It can happen..a friend of mine wasn't so smart and has been in a bad situation the past few months.

Only you can answer that question. If you have good credit, hardly any debt, and have a good amount of money left over each month, then you might be able to afford it. If you have poor credit, no down payment, and the monthly payment would leave you with barely anything left each month, then you probably shouldn't do it. It's really as simple as that.

Don't forget insurance, gas, maintenance, accessories, etc...

You need to figure out what is a comfortable payment for YOU, and for how long. Then go to a dealer and see if you can get the truck you want within those terms. Some people on here pay cash, others use big down payments, and others are fine paying $700 a month. You need to figure out what works for you.

This may be irrelevant to some but..

Another thing I considered before buying new was do I really want a 35-40k truck sitting outside all the time & exposed to the elements/morons? I live in a apartment complex (no parking garage....) with idiots who just fling their car doors open and door ding me all the time even if I park at the furthermost corner of the lot.... (I know this can happen anywhere). I do not know about others but, I try to keep my truck as if it looked like it just pulled off the lot the day it was birthed from Toyota. I'd be furious if I were to pick up a new 2017 Tacoma just to have it door dinged or hailed compared to a used truck don't get me wrong I'd still get pissed but that is why I bought used until I find a place of my own where I know at least 30-40% of the time it was protected. You've got some awesome information from everybody here.
