Bakflip MX4 Prelim Review

We are siliconed and the rails no longer leak at the rail to bedrail interface. We are still leaking from the hinges in the cover where they meet the rail.... has anyone found a fix for this secondary leak?

 

Hey you 3rd gen fellas. I have a 2nd gen with a bak flip G2. Do you guys think I could use the rail drop down brackets that come with the 3rd gen cover setup on my 2nd gen (see photo)??? Open to all input and opinions. I would really love to be able to use my tie down rails again. Thanks

Only if the profile of your 2nd Gen rail is identical to the 3rd Gen rail. Find someone with a 3rd Gen Bakflip and compare rails. The 3rd Gen drop down brackets slides into the 3rd Gen Bak Flip rail, so profile would need to be identical.

The top of the bed rail sits higher on gen 3 versus gen 2. That said I'm pretty sure the stock position of the rail at the same height (from the bottom of the bed) for gen 2 and gen 3. Therefore using the gen 3 brackets would end up making the rail sit even lower in the bed if used on a gen 2. Does the gen 2 rail have the track that's accepts the brackets?

 

Here is what the bracket looks like. Mine is from a Bak Revolver X2, but I believe the brackets are identical for the MX4. I painted mine black, before installing. It is shown in the orientation it sits against the bed wall. The lower threaded hole is where the Tacoma bedrail mounts to. The middle hole is where the bracket is bolted in to the threaded female fitting in the bed wall. The very top is tapered, and also has a notched channel, and it slides into the Bak rail for 3rd gen. Unless your Bak rail has a matching male profile to the female notch on top of this bracket, I doubt it would fit. I also found a close up picture of the bracket mounted to the Bak rail.

 

This is where i am leaking from as well , backflip has shipped me a brand new cover and still waiting for it to be delivered

 

I am still waiting to hear from them. I wonder if they had a bad batch? Please let us know if the new one leaks as well. So far this has been the leakiest tonneau I have ever experienced in 4 trucks. Water collects in puddles on the top and pretty much just runs into the bed where each hinge portion meets the inner rail. The bottom of the cover and the inner rail have a good interface. Water seems to be getting past somehow - maybe leaking into the cover and out the bottom bypassing the seals.

 

Yeah mine were leaking just on the other side of the rails at all the folds on both sides

 

Bakflip MX4 is just a mess! It finally started raining hard here in Cali and bam check out my pictures. Did some of the options here to help with the leak but still no success. I really dont want to put the sealant. I want refund!

 

Sealant is the only way to really fix it. I have the G2 and using sealant and some thin rubber window weather rubber gaskets under the OEM bed cap took care of my leaks.

 

Does the tailgate gasket kit part of the bakflip mx4? I don't think mine came with the package.

I don't know about the tailgate gasket, mine is a G2 and did not come with it. With the design of the Tacoma plastic bed rails, it is pretty tough for any bed cover to be leak free. I had the OEM one and there was no way to seal it like the BakFlip, that is why I got rid of the OEM in favor of the G2. I knew it would leak but at least I knew could seal it. I still have to add a little silicone sealant at the front left corner because I still get a few drips there, but the rest is dry! I love the cover now but you just have to put in a little extra work to get there. I don't have any gaskets on the tailgate and I am leak free there.

 

Here is shot of the gasket I used that I bought at LOWES. Before I took my BakFlip off, I marked the edge of the overlap of the cover with Blue painters tape so I knew the boundary of where to put my bead of silicone. It also made cleanup easier where the sealant oozed out.

 

Are the bed rails different on a Trdpro? Is that why the factory cover doesn't fit? I really like the look of the MX4.....

 

Why did you take the top plastic covers off the top sides , no one has ever mentioned to do that , other than taking the front piece off and putting a seal under that ???

 

I'm sorry to see so many here have issues with this tonneau. Other than the gap at the front I have not had any issues. A bit of water here and there, but not much, it is not perfectly waterproof. But then, none of the camper shells I have had in the past were waterproof either.

I just returned from a multiday trip up north in the massive rains we have been having in Norcal and nothing in the back of my truck got wet.

 

The bed rails designed by Toyota have indents on the side that when the BAK Industries side rails fit over them, they need to be sealed with silicone to eliminate as best possible any water leakage. The MX4 BAKFlip might look good but to be honest with you, I would never recommend it for all the grief due to a poor design by the manufacturer.

The lame excuse from BAK Industries is that EVERY Tonneau cover leaks. If they designed it with a wider - edge to edge covering plus made it longer to cover the tailgate, they just might resolve some of their warranty issues. They have a mindset at BAK Industries, one size fits all.

Good advice - look elsewhere.

 

Mine has a seal under the lip of the flange also, so that little seal that bridges the indents you show isn't the only seal that is on mine. I agree if that is the only seal along the rail that it would leak.

 

Thanks all for what you did and all the info you've given me. I was going to buy it too but now I'm back to square 1 searching which is better than going through all the headaches.
