    Stuff. Also things.
Hey Brett, I'm sure this has been covered, but my understanding is that there is NOT a true off the shelf HC bumper for 1st Gen. Is that true?

I think my trail gear will be fine, but I am kinda curious.

And what's so wrong with @alee891's badass color matched bumper?! :D

Ebay ($80) - I also had some ebay bucks, so it was $53 shipped.
    Amazon ($89 after tax)

Both are in packaging/new. Right now, there is nothing on ebay at this price. But I recommend checking frequently if you are not in a rush and want to save some coin

I was also told at one time that high clearance rears aren't necessary on first gens... and I was dead set on not getting one.

My incident which pushed me to go HC:

    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/alee891s-radiant-red-build-bs.415933/page-30#post-13104080

I think I would have gotten away with it even if I'd had a tube bumper with side protection, but now that my bedside is smashed I've decided to go high clearance.

Ironic that the topic came up, as I hope to get my bumper installed this weekend.

I'm still sticking to my guns saying that a good wrap around tube bumper will protect you the same way a HC rear would. :boink:

Granted it has more risk of getting "hung up" but I don't think it would ever keep me from accomplishing an obstacle. Also mostly saying it because it gets you as heated as @BDN gets about winch hooks. :p

I got the exact same thing on my bedside when i slid off road into trees last year. Cant see it with the black tho. I managed to weld it from backside very carefully and since my trucks done in bedliner it was easy to touch up.

I think most would be fine with a tube wrap around. I would have been.

Does anyone know if there's a high clearance winch bumper around? I'm gonna go look on google and stuff, I just figured I'd ask.

CBI used to have one you had to cut for.

    This.

There is absolutely NO point or any gains from cutting the bed sides. None.

Sorry Brett @Squeaky Penguin but there isn't. :luvya: Your just justifying hacking your own truck up :p

A simple wrap around works just as good. There is no point to hacking your bedsides off in the name of "clearance". You aren't gaining any clearance in a spot that makes a difference to justify it as clearance.

The only advantage a "high clearance" bumper has over a wrap around is that its easier to fab a rear bumper that way.

Now yes, not every wrap around is created equal. A 2'' pipe 1/2'' below the bedsides is stupid(badlands bumper) you just drag it over everything. A smaller tube or plate though, and you'll be fine to slam it and drag it over anything just as good as a "high clearance" bumper.

You hit that spot though in odd places on the trail and I can't hardly think of a situation where you would get stuck because god forbid you didn't cut your bed sides and gain 1'' from them. Not one. You'll easily be able to pull yourself out from it.

Oh and wrap arounds look way better then any cut up bedside bumper I've seen.

    Don't wheel hard enough..pff. :luvya:

CBI use to. I don't recall if their current offering is a wrap around or high clearance. No one cares about making new stuff for 1st gens anymore. I asked Pelfrybilt about it in moab, and his answer was there wasn't any money in it. Probably a reasonable business decision.

 Didn't know you had one in the works.

Spring Creek is a challenging trail for sure. I bananed my mid skid in the rock garden pretty damn good.

Not true at all. Old Brett gets way more heated about those silly, anodized, over-priced winch hooks than I do about high-clearance bumpers. Want to ask me about 5100s though? :D

Lastly, to address all these comments regarding a wrap around. Will it protect your bedside? Probably. If there any reason not to hack off some worthless sheet metal and gain clearance. No.

I guarantee I can find a spot where you'll get hung up on your wrap around, find a poky rock that still dents the bedside, or hit it so hard you push it into the sheet metal (depending on how it's made).
