Hey everyone, im new and this is my first post. Im looking to buy a 2nd gen tacoma and found an 07 access cab TRD off road with the v6 and 6 speed manual transmission locally so i went to check it out. The dealership was super cool and let me take it home for the night, and today i brought it back. When i was heading home, i jumped on the highway and at 65 mph, the thing was screaming at 3500 rpm in 6th gear. As soon as i got home, i found the axle code for the gear ratios in the door jam and googled it. Apparently this thing has 4.56 gears in it lol. Anyone ever hear of such a thing in a bone stock tacoma? It came from canada and the dealership sent it out to have the dash converted to mph and odometer to miles. Definitely not buying it as i can only imagine tbe horrible gas milage and engine life.

I am going to look at an 06 double cab SB auto TRD off road on saturday. Anything to look for?

I haven't heard of stock 4.56's before, but if you are planning on putting 33"+ tires on your tacoma, it's one less thing you would have to do. If you plan on staying on stock size tires, get one with a stock gear ratio (around 3.73 IIRC)

Ya but do you think 33's would make that big of a difference? It has 29's on it now

That's pretty crazy, I wouldn't like that. Somebody must have re-geared it for hardcore offroading....

    Something is WRONG.

I have 4.56 gears in my 5 speed auto and I do 2,600-2,700 RPM at 75-80mph.

You have an extra gear and are only doing 65.

That truck likely had 3.73 gears stock. If it has 4.56 it isn't stock... and that won't be labeled in the door jamb.

The 4 cylinder versions had 4.10 gears I think.

IF it does have 4.56 gears in it and you are running the standard 29" tires you'd definitely have very high RPMs. It would take 35" tires to put 4.56 gears into the factory standard RPM range.

Edit: I wonder if this truck once had a lift and big tires on it and it was returned to "stock" before being traded in. But the gears were left in it?

Yeah, there's a pretty big wheel torque disadvantage for 33" compared to 29" tires. On 33's, you would need 4.10s to be the same as 29" tires with a 3.75 ratio axle. You would still be a bit overgeared for highway use, but not nearly as bad.

Interesting. I am at about 3000 RPMs going 65 with 4.56 gears on 33" tires.

If his has 4.56 gears and stock tires then I don't doubt it is at 3500 rpm

You can't compare auto versus manual rpm's. Auto 4.88 gear ratio is equivalent to manual 4.56 rpm wise.

If OP plans on 35's then 4.56 will be ideal, but anything less than 34/35" tires and you don't want 4.56 gears with a manual transmission.

The 6 speed from what ive read actually has a higher ratio final gear(or would it be lower?) 6th speed than the older 5 speeds ( more rpms) i dont know how accurate this page is, but i went off of this http://www.lcengineering.com/LCTechPages/TECHGEARJANUARY.html the door jam code was A04-something

I know it's not the same... but it still correlates. 29" tires with 4.56 is terrible.

Yes you are right about that, but nothing is wrong with the truck like you stated, that's just how it is with those gears and those size tires

I dont drive on the highway much, but im never going to put 35's on it so i passed on the truck. Going to look at a double cab trd auto on saturday. Most i would go is 33's being my daily driver

Yes, something is wrong. The dealer is selling a "stock" used Tacoma that is massively over geared.

It should not be running 3,500 RPM at 65mph.

Yes, if it does have 4.56 gears and 29" tires it makes sense that it IS at 3,500 RPM. But that isn't good by any stretch.

OP should either lift it and put 34/35" tires on it.... or pass on the truck entirely. Who knows how long it's been driven hard like this.

It was at nissan dealer and the salesmen used to sell toyotas i guess. He gave a blank stare when i told him about tbe gears the rpms. I then asked if anyone has even driven the thing and he said, no just got out of detail. I said, well you might want to looking into new ring and pinions or putting bigger tires on it.

Just goes to show... used from a dealer doesn't mean they've taken time to inspect anything. LoL

OP - sounds more like you were in 4th gear instead of 6th.
My truck, with oem-size P245/75-16 tires, turns about 2400 at 65 mph verified by my calibrated ScanGauge in 6th.

Just a thought, the engine temp sensor went bad in my wife's 2002 Chebby Blazer, it caused the transmission to hold lower gears for much longer, I guess because the computer assumed the engine was cold and needed to warm up. It would scream along at seemingly high RPM even after being run for 15-20 minutes.
