    damnit it sent it wrong. oh well. we snapped a cable while trawling. luckily no one was around it when it popped. it felt like the boat hit something pretty solid and then we started do donuts because our other side gear was still firmly in the water. had to drag a grappling hook with 100lbs chain attached to it to get the hook to touch the bottom. after 3 hours or so of dragging it we LUCKILY snagged our gear back. this was going to the benefits of synthetic winch rope.

    wouldn't be the first time. but we mostly just catch old tires and lost anchors near the shipping channels. but I think that was just a bad section of cable. plastic jacketed galvanized cable doesn't show bad spots very well. needless to say we've switched to stainless, non-jacketed. at least we can see the bad spots now!

    the coolest thing was a HUGE manta ray that we had in the net. it was too big for our gear (30'x75' mouth on our net) and got lodged halfway in and curled up like a soft taco haha. we were trying to figure out how to get it out of the net when it decided it was bored and wanted to move on. it just nonchalantly spread its wings, ripped our net down a seam and swam off like nothing was wrong. a big ol 20'+hole was all we had left to remember her by haha. weirdest? we catch some weird underwear off of Florida.
