we take data on everything that we bring on board, but the things we mainly get our primary data from are croaker, whiting( southern kingfish), weakfish, bluefish, cobia, and Spanish and king mackerels. also any turtle we land we get all measurements, weigh, tag with flipper tags and a PIT tag and release.

the big guys can have barbs over 8" long.

Yessir. otherwise we would be required to have a turtle excluder and we wouldn't be able to physically catch the big guys

we see it a good bit in the summer. it seems to be a heat stress related issue. ive never heard anyone who could taste a difference though. once the heads are gone, theyre all the same!

we try and get most everything (except our priority species and things not easily identifiable) back alive. a lot of times their barbs break off in the other rays or get lodged and broken in the table and gunwales. and on the BIG guys I try and remove them before they get too friskey and catch someone off-guard and injure them. that's our most likely injury out there.
