My 2007 with tow package is rated at 6500 lbs. I've trailered motorcycles and pulled cars on tow dollies with it without issues. My only problems were the weak rear springs. I had the TSB done and added Timbren bump stops that helped to firm up the ride when loaded.

Somehow I thought too manual transmission was rated for much less then the automatic transmission or they may have just put that in there because I don't want you burning up the clutch

I'm thinking about getting a camping trailer that's about 5,000 pounds it does have the towing package with the transmission cooler

No tranny cooler on a manual btw. Also go tow something that's 5k first before I invest in a big trailer then fill it with crap to camp with. 6500 lbs is a shit load for a truck this small to feel good towing it.

I'm pretty sure does have a transmission cooler because there's a little tiny thin Radiator in front of the much bigger normal radiator far as I know that's the transmission cooler

It is a 4000 pound trailer empty about 5,000 once you add water and supplies

I've done a ton of towing with trailers up 5,500 pounds. Much has been through mountains and much has been at altitude. If you are mostly flat land and low altitude, you could do more, but...I would not want to make a habit of pulling a trailer over 3,500. My camp trailer, a Scamp, weight 2,500.
My truck: 6 spd, 4:56 gears 33" tires, twin stick FJ.

    Here are the main issues:
    1. The ring and pinion on these trucks is too small. It was a hold over from the 4 cylinder trucks. When you pull any kind of grade, the heat build up is incredible. You can go from 150 to 250 degrees in just a couple of miles. The pinion is installed in these trucks using a crush washer. When you subject the truck to extreme loads, you can further compress that washer and alter your gear mesh. When I installed my gears and locker, I replaced the crush washer with solid shims. A good synthetic oil like Amsoil Severe gear 85-140, or Redline 75-110 or 85-140 is a must for any towing.

    2. The 4.0 really starts to struggle at higher elevations. Even running empty you can feel it, but with a trailer, it has you working the gears to keep moving.

    3. The reverse gear in the manual is worthless for maneuvering a trailer. Trying to maneuver a heavy trailer in potentially rough terrain is going to work the hell out of your clutch. That is the main reason I installed a twin stick FJ case. If you can figure out the electric 2 lo mod, that would work too.

    4. If you get over 250 pounds on the hitch, you will need air bags or upgraded rear suspension. The stock suspension can barely carry the empty bed.

No matter what you upgrade, a 5,000 pound trailer with work the hell out of your truck if you use it for all the usual stuff: climbing hills, camping, pulling through mud or snow, backing up, etc. On flat land, at low elevation, for short distances, you COULD do it. I would trade up to a Tundra.

There's definitely some good information in there and thank you for your reply but I will not be getting a tundra I don't like full-size trucks have her first small trucks just my preference I've read that the truck in some places it says it's ready for 6400 pounds and some places it says it's rated for Less I'm not 100% sure but I have a feeling it'll pull 5000 pounds with little to no problem backing it up I might be a little entertaining

I have a six speed 2012. I have never seen/heard about a cooler on a manual transmission. Looking at the AC condenser pehaps?

That is your AC, not a tranny cooler. The tranny is not the weak link though, the rear diff is.

Most of these trucks have a 1200 lb pay load. A 5500 lb trailer will have a tongue weight of over 700 lbs leaving less than 500 lbs for passengers and cargo in the truck. Adding air bags of tweaking the rear suspension only hides the problem, not correct it.

Engines lose about 3% of their power for every 1000' of elevation. If you're pulling at 5000' you need to reduce payload and towing capacity by 15%. If you ever get to 10,000' then reduce it by 30%.

This isn't just a Toyota problem. All truck manufacturers give tow ratings under ideal conditions and assuming an empty truck other than a driver. In the real world not much more than 1/2 the max tow rating is a good idea. For short distances, level ground, close to sea level or occasional use then working close to the max payload is a less of a problem.

In addition to my Tacoma I also have an F-150. About 5000 lbs is all I'd tow with it even though it is rated for about 8,000.

My truck doesn't have a Trans Oil Cooler either.

I have a 2013 4x4 double cab Off-Road manual transmission (35" tires and Geared 4.56). My trailer is a 27' x-lite travel trailer that weighs 4,750 lbs dry. I've taken the trailer up and down the California Coast and all the way to Utah. It struggles going up mountains, sometimes having to shift from 5th (I hardly in 6th gear when towing.) to 3rd gear. The rear end sagged with my stock leafs combined with my AALs.

Once I changed out my stock leafs for Alcan Leaf Springs, my truck hardly sags. I recently added a Magnuson Supercharger but I have not taken the trailer anywhere yet.

I like it. I can't believe it took me this long to pull the trigger on it. I will let you know how it goes in a couple of weeks when I take it out.

I got it on the group buy for $4k.

I have the smaller 2.85 pulley boosting 8lbs. I haven't dyno'd it yet because it isn't flashed with a proper tune yet. The Bully Dog programmer didn't work for my truck.

That is your engine oil cooler, which both the manual and automatic have.
