No he was saying the MSRP was 41k. But later he admited he only paid 38k for it. He did add a bunch of "amenities" and wanted the cost back.

Either way he said carmax (i think?) offered 34900. So... theres that... lol

It's less Tacoma and more mod
In all seriousness though there really isn't much for me to discuss here. I mostly comment on and attempt to help with mechanical and electrical issues or things people have done to their 1st gens as that is what I have the most experience with. But it's been fun chatting with you :) If our paths cross again so be it, and for the last time I told you he's a rainbow Pony named Chester! Enjoy your whiskey, I'd have some scotch if I didn't have to work in about 2 hrs.

Cars are not investments, so depreciation shouldn't matter. Money in vehicles is money lost (mods and original purchase cost).

I'm far more of a ford loyalist than Toyota. I have about $25K in mods on my Ford and I think my Tacoma is more lost money. I think Toyotas are grossly over priced. 2nd Gens were riding the line but 3rd Gens crossed the line big time. I think for the $$$ Ford is much better. You actually get power, capability, and options for your money. With Toyota you get hype and that's about all.
My Fords have been amazing for me. No mechanical issues with them at all. My Toyota keeps having random shit act up and then it disappears as soon as I get a dealer to look at it. I don't have a lot of confidence I'm going to get my money's worth out of it. Considering selling it (and getting my spouse an A4). Ford just confirmed they are releasing an eco diesel in their F150 in 2018. I'm going to strongly consider that. Means I can put another $20K in mods in the thing and get basically a lifetime out of the truck. But I'm going to bet the initial cost will drive me into the poorhouse (I'd guess $65K for a Lariat Diesel).

I like Fords. I think you get way more for your money. If the depreciation is bothering you then buy a couple years old.

I need a full size truck, I can't go without in my life, so my opinion tends to lean towards them. The Tacoma isn't really capable of anything. I think it's great if you are a weekend warrior that does small projects but for farm/construction life it's pretty much only good for picking up small things.

I think it's funny you are freaking out about Ford depreciation but then talking about spending in the mid $30k's for a Toyota. You could get a 2015 Lariat for that. What do you think you are getting with that coin from Toyota that you aren't getting from Ford?

If you want a Taco go 2nd Gen between 2011 and 2015. The new generations are known for a lot of mechanical problems.

Eh.. you are probably right. I remember thinking the add ons he did were nothing special at all. I dont remember the amenities being that high..but all well.. doesnt really matter.

Well I am complaining about the Ford depreciation because my $47k truck with 9500 miles on got me back a little under $28k from insurance. I paid a bit over $36k for it, then $7k for my fully owned trade after tax and everything came to over $31k OTD. IT was the highest level XLT you can get, without getting the special edition. Now I did like the truck, but after driving it for a few months it just felt cheap for the money. The interior is all cheap grade plastic, the My link system was horrible, a
nd the seats are really cheap. I hate leather so Lariat and Platinum trims are worthless to me. My dads GMC is much nicer interior. I just thought I wanted and needed the Crew cab. Didnt need it. Granted I had no mechanical issues with it. I dont think I would buy another one. Unless it was the Larait Sport Special edition. Then I would consider. Otherwise Ill try GM or Yota.

    This...

But also the buy backs seem to be pretty rare around here. There are people with massive problems that can't get a buy back authorized. Imagine the shitboxes that make the cut!

I wouldn't touch that thing with a ten foot pole.

Tacomas are the exception with depreciation, not the rule. Most cars depreciate considerably the first couple years. This is why if you are going to get upset about lost money you buy used or buy a cheaper vehicle. Life sucks here but hopefully you won't have to deal with a totalled car again in your life. Also talk to your insurance company about extra coverage. My Taco is covered for black book plus 20% if its a total loss. I did this because of mods and to help cover some depreciation. It makes like a $2/mo difference in my premium.

I walked out of a totalled Subaru last year (amazingly). It wasn't mine but it made me want to make blows like that easier to deal with.

Also just FYI Toyotas have the worst cloth I've come across. I get mystery stains all the time. Lol.

I have a 2015 GMC 1500 All Terrain. I love it for the most part. The V8-V4 transmission really sucks power from its acceleration and take off. Over 50 degrees, I average 19-20 mpg, highway 22-24. The height is great stock, so much room inside that my 2 year olds giant car seat is no problem with 2 adults in the back. I am 6'3" and It feels like a truck. I sat in a tacoma the other day and it felt like a car. So much lower, and the interior and bed is much smaller. The biggest reason I am consider a tacoma is to go places the GMC wouldn't go. My FJ went every where. I don't feel that with my current truck. I guess the biggest question is what do you want out of your truck? Recreational off road, drive to work, does size matter? Depreciation sucks. My truck sticker-ed at 53750 and I got it out the door for 44K with TTL included. I essentially got over 12K off which is huge. Pick which truck is going to be most useful. I don't think I could get a tacoma and not have a lift

Sorry to hear about your Ford. But good riddance to it. Glad you were not hurt. I didn't read all of the posts on this thread but in case it wasn't mentioned the Ford dealer should of offered you GAP insurance and you should of bought it. If GAP was mentioned then Im re-enforcing it. Anytime you buy a vehicle and and have to borrow a large % of the vehicles cost you better get GAP or you end up in the situation you are currently in.

Fwiw, not sure why you would buy a Ford in the first place?

Taco dealer was being hard to deal with. .... That was back when there were not that many 3rd gen Tacos around tho. OP probably wanted to get better than MSRP and they wouldn't budge off of the price...is my bet.

Still a Ford?...LOL. A buddy pre-ordered his ORDC and it took like 6 mths and a huge hassle between 2-3 dealers to get his. But he was one of the first 3rd gen owners out there.

GAP insurance would not have gotten him any more money than he got. They gave him more than he owed. It only covers the difference in what you owe to what the value is. However... I agree that GAP insurance is a good idea if you finance the entire purchase or are upside down at all. Drop it once you are in the black.

Hear that... Fords are big in the US market. I got my 3rd Gen TRD Sport manual 09/2015... was on the lot when I drove up, test drive.. sold... then fight with dealer on price, they did a bait and switch...then a lie or 3, complete BS.

If you're willing to go full size, I'd be looking for a Tundra. They really don't cost much more than Tacoma, and you get a lot of truck for your $. Just my opinion. I would have gone tundra if I didn't need the off road abilities of the Tacoma.

The toyota dealership was very hard to deal with. They ordered my truck wrong and wanted to charge me extra for the additions they ordered it with. I did not want to pay it and they wouldnt go lower on the price. It was when dealerships couldnt keep Tacos on the lots. So I was mad I was being treated like crap. I went to ford because I got the F150 with every option the XLT offers and it was a crew cab. It was only about $2500 more than the Taco. GMC was way more than I could afford fr what I wanted and I didnt like the front of the Silverado's.

Gap wouldnt have helped me as other members described, I got more than I owed from insurance because of my trade in equity and equity on the truck

The Tundras get the HORRIBLE gas Mileage, plus I just dont like them.

The Silverado I was going to see Sold before I could make my way out there. The sales guy texted me. I am going to look at the blue Taco i posted. Will see what they can do on the price tonight. I value the options it has and I cant afford a 17 with those options.
