Oil is Completely empty!!

Like many people have mentioned, if the low oil pressure light did not come on, there is a high likelihood you will have a substantial amount of oil left in the pan. Before you start worrying to much, drain the oil and you can deduct how much was actually lost. Then you can go about fixing you leaking gasket. Just because there is not oil registering on the dip stick does not mean there is not oil in the motor

 

Owner's manual states oil light indicates dangerously low oil pressure. Not a gauge of oil level. Hopefully since yours never came on it Had enough to keep things from wearing. Honestly, all you can do is fix the leak and refill. Either its fine or not.

 

Thank you everyone for the information!! I did freak out a little for no reason because it was only about 2.5 qts low. Which is a lot of loss but not as bad as I thought.

After cleaning and driving it around I am now thinking it is indeed the main seal around the crack shaft...

Does anyone know how hard this would be to change and is there any kind of write up for it?

How hard was the seal to change?

I didn't change it, I was in Moab at the time and found oil pissing into my IFS skid while airing up at the end of the day. I didn't have the tools on hand to fix it so I had to take it to a local mechanic. I got lucky and one of the local parts stores had a compatible seal. If I recall the work, serpentine belt, and seal was a little over $300

 

That looks like it came from your rear main seal, not the oil pan seal. Would explain why its up near trans and on the driveshaft. I blew the rear main on my 09 a few years aga and know many many others who have as well. Luckily i was still covered under powertrain warranty at the time, but they gave me a rental and kept it 3 days. Gotta drop the trans to replace it

 

Obviously not checking oil regularly despite having a leak.

You'd have a hell of a leak to blow through all of your motor oil in an hour of driving

 

Check to see id the 'oil' indicator works...... turn the key on, don't start it and observe all the warning lights that will got on..... including the 'oil' light.

 

Any way I can tell for sure which one it is?

 

Fill your oil back up, clean everything up, run the engine for a while. Should start leaking.

 

I drove it around the neighborhood today, and nothing leaked. I am guessing I need to get the oil hotter to make it thinner before the leak happens.

 

Maybe, just be sure everything is clean and oil level is normal before you start your search. Depending on how bad the leak is it might not be immediately obvious, might take a while for drips to start showing up.

 

I have a oil pressure gauge plumbed in, at idle it hovers around 19-22psi at freeway speeds it's 65-75psi. Never had the oil light come on, but now I wonder what the dangerously low oil pressure level is.

 

An old time rule of thumb is: 10 psi of pressure per 1000rpm. Your stated pressures are ideal.

When did you last check the oil? The dipstick will only measure 2 to 2-1/2 qts low or so--there may be 2-1/2 to 3 qts left and it would not show on the stick...

 

Fairly new to the Tacoma, but thought I read on here about non function PCV valves blowing out front/rear main seals. Worth checking out/replacing to avoid it happening again.

It had been a while but I had just got under it and sprayed the whole bottom off and never noticed it.
