I like the foam idea since you don't have to remove the seat backs and storage bins from inside of the cab to access the vents. I am going to the hardware store to get some foam and also picking up two log sections of 3" foam pipe insulation. I figure I can stuff it up there from under neath the truck and loop it around the vent leaving the bottom open. This should insulate 3 sides of each vent. I'll post some photos of the install and update the results.

I put sound proofing on floor from the backseats back and up the back of the cab. I used 1/2 memory and covered the cab vents on the inside. Reduced the inside cabin noise was very noticeable.

Did you take any pics? Post them up please! Also anyone have a decibel meter? It would be nice to see how many decibels the sound proofing brings it down.

Thanks for this. That noise drives me crazy to the point that I tore the truck apart to get a quieter raide. I had previously done the seal glue trick. Headed to the store in the AM to by 3" foam. Cheers

There is a purpose, namely to vent air from the cab in the event that an airbag(s) goes off, the increased cabin pressure gets vented from the two rear bulkhead vents. Im not an engineer so what happens if you block or partially block these vents I don't know. All I do know is that my stock 16 Taco is so fucking noisy at highway speed that I'm prepared to close off some portion of those vents for a quieter ride. My 07 Ford Ranger, stock also, is way quieter than my Taco. It's really the only thing I seriously believe Toyota mis engineered on this truck.

I dot think you can get to it for Grest Stuff, plus that stuff hardens up. You want 'soft' foam so it can flex and breathe ... and move if the air bags go off.

So FWIW, after I quieted my truck down there was this new 'howling' noise I could now hear.
It comes from the holes in the bottom of the 'A' arms. They act like a wind instrument. I taped them over and the last wind noise was gone. There is a post on this site about the howling, the ocarina effect, that's someone else's discovery and it works. Turns out there is even a TSB for it. Today I'll stop by the hardware store and buy some 9/16 and 11/16 inch plastic plugs to fix it permanently.

you know, I think air bag venting is part of it, but in a you tube video that the head toyota engineer did about aerodynamics, he said it was to make the doors close easier. That said, I still believe you have to leave some part of one vent uncovered. The foam will vent and move if the air bags go off, that's why I like foam. If you do this, see my last post about the 'A' arm holes, you'll hear that noise too, when you quiet it down a little.

The vents are also there so you can close doors (with windows up) without interior pressure resistance.

So 31.5% more quiet, huh. Not bad. A quiet gain of 15.75% per partially covered vent. Where are you storing all that extra quiet? Does it fit in the cab?

Thanks for the ideas, I always think the window is open and I have been blaming the dolfin wing on the roof. As for the rear tire noise, the bed is like a sound chamber and the vents are like a microphone. I bought the toyota bed mat and it reduced the tire noise by 50% now I'll go after the dam vents.

I was in the back working on some things in the early fall and had the seats and plastic bins out. While I was there I placed thick strips of caulk on the vents, not to SEAL them but to make it a little more difficult to open on their own. Plus, I felt the added mass would help with the sound. I had to leave the seats and bins out for a few days so got a chance to observe. Anyway, did notice on a pre to post caulking test drive, the vents open less with the added weight. Without weight they don't really open when driving as much as they flutter. Don't notice any more difficulty closing the doors than pre-caulk condition. Do notice reduction in wind noise post caulk. Only perceivable difference is my ears pop a little more when driving in the mountains, likely from increased resistance to air pressure equalization I just used two thick beads of RTV silicone that I had left over after some work I was going to throw out anyway. I placed the beads on the lower 1/2 of the vent, furthest away from the hinge on the inside, to bias the lever to a closing position.

Hindsight, It was worth it to do since the seats and bins were out and it added some reduction in noise. I wouldn't take the seats out just to do that. I didn't think it was worth the effort.

The other thing that really cuts down noise is having towels and blankets rolled up and in the plastic bins with the seat up. We leave them in there all year since we use the truck for all of our outdoor activities in summer and keep it back there as an emergency winter pack. I noticed a huge difference when I drove around last week when I took them out to wash them. They are Light weight (two fleece blankets and 2 Bath towels) and they are compressible enough when we need to put other things in the bin.

It was a joke, I would never use that on my truck.
