i've pulled mine down at least 4 times (led's, homelink mirror install) and the fasteners still look great and holds tight.

I pulled my console down, and yes it popped right off no problem. What I did find is that Toyota has elected to install a hard plastic ring around the opening (you will see this once you pop the console down). I saw what the dealer did, they used a cheesy piece of foam tape on one corner. What has happened to mine is the plastic ring has become unglued from the headliner and there is a gap. I had some single sided tape foam insulation from some house hold project, and I was able to put that in to lessen the gap between the headliner and the plastic ring. So far so good. The factory wire wrap was on the backside of the console was fine.

Do you have a picture of the red push type fastener? Reason I ask is I replaced my temp/compass electronics, and when I took the console out i believe a metal clip went flying out and I never found it. Now my overhead console is a little loose but it doesn't rattle so I haven't fixed it. Ordered what I thought was the right metal clips from Toyota today in hopes of fixing it. But after reading this thread now I'm not sure what I broke?

    Hi Everyone,

Update on my rattle. Now that temps are above freezing the rattle has completely disappeared. It seemed to be primarily on nights when the temp got below 20deg. I guess I will enjoy a nice quite spring/summer/fall and see if it shows up again next winter.

I have this rattle as well. Found out it was the silver piece of metal above the head liner under the moon roof. Slapped some felt tape where it makes contact and it has been gone for 5k miles now.

I had the same issue. Take a pen or knife and slide it in between the Windshield and the headliner where they meet by the overhead console. Wiggle it back and forth to create some space between the headliner and windshield... Solved my problem.

i thought it was coming from the sunglass holder but I think the sound resonates through there.

I'm having a rattle from the center roof console that comes and goes. Road imperfections or bass will make it rattle. I can't seem to find the post, maybe it wasn't on this forum? The guy posted pics of a white, rectangular plastic piece that the adhesive had failed after pulling console. I'm leery of pulling the console due to breaking the clips, but I am going to try after reading this post.

I have the same problem. Could you provide pictures of the exact location of the fix or be more specific on location of the felt fix ? Are you referring to the metal track? Any help would be appreciated.

I have a rattle forming in the headliner above the rear seat immediately after the moonroof. I can replicate it by tapping the ceiling. anyone have this one and solved it ?

They ended up spraying a insulation type of foam in there to stop the noise. I'll try to find the print out from the day I brought it back

Mine was the overhead console, they replaced it rather then trying to rig it with glue or tape.

Bringing this back from the dead. The search function is a beautiful thing. I was having the same issue with the headliner in my truck near the forward passenger side of the sunglass holder/switch panel/interior light assembly. My truck does not have a sunroof. I am not sure if the following applies with the trucks equipped with sunroofs.

When I applied pressure or tapped on that corner, I could replicate the sound. After reading that all that assembly needed was a firm pull to come down, I mustered up the balls to do so. There is one connector to disconnect and the entire thing comes free. What I found was a black plastic rectangular sort of frame which went wound the perimeter of the opening in the headliner which was mentioned in earlier posts. The glue which was supposed to secure it to the headliner came loose in that corner, and in other places as well. After taking a bunch of photos and coming up short with justifying why it was there in the first place, I decided to remove it. I did not want to epoxy it back into place because I did not want the glue to leach through the insulation and soak into the headliner. The old glue had already come loose, nothing else was affected by it, and nothing was structurally affected, so I wanted to remove it altogether.

There is no good way without bending the metal tabs up there to remove it on one piece, so I cut it in half where the material was the thinnest. I used a beefy pair of scissors to do the job. Kind of says how crap the material is when it can be cut with scissors. After removing it, I went in with some adhesive backed felt to secure the mirror harness which was held in place with the same old glue to the frame. The sunglass holder assembly went back into place, and the rattle was completely gone.

Below you can see how the frame is lifted from the headliner because the glue broke loose.

Below is the mirror harness which needed to be re-secured because it was previously glued to the frame. The frame is removed in these pics.

    wr1ir6_c4a0ee5e48687f181f0d3028e36d6d413380d7bf.jpg

I secured the harness with some felt tape.

    2dkk0wi_a38143e3f92adb12881a2669ea6b74e52075ad6e.jpg

This is what the frame looks like when removed. You can see where I cut it as well, right where there was the least amount of material holding it together.

    25gupgj_96d726444385a5b8abf98169dd1c7fe3a0615b42.jpg

The glob of glue in the lower left corner of the frame is where the mirror harness was secured. Some light pressure on it and it came free of the glue. I did not need to cut the glue or anything to get it to come free. The entire frame separated from the glue with some light upward pressure. Thank you to everyone who posted info about where to look and how to do certain things. Couldn’t have fixed this without it!

Awesome. TRDOR with the same issue. It's on the corner by passenger side right by the map light. Happens when it's below 50 degrees out, until the heat kicks in. Once it's warm inside, it goes away, making me think it's a glue issue. I want to tackle this in the spring.

How hard was it to take the headliner off? I've been searching for posts or threads on this because I want to add a layer of reflectix for the summer heat. Any tips on taking the headliner off?

Also, any TRDOR with same issue? does the plastic component come off as easy as the maplight/sunglass holder combo? since the TRDOR has all the off road nanny switches up high? thanks in advance.

If by the plastic component, you mean the plastic frame in the last picture, then yes it is very easy to remove if you are okay with cutting it in half. I was able to remove it very easily once it was two pieces. Otherwise, it would have been much more difficult to remove. Not impossible, but not worth the hassle in my opinion.

Correct, I did not remove the headliner, just the dome light/sunglass holder assembly. Glad it was helpful!

    lots to come...
Whale..... I have this rattle too. Right above the crawl control console. I removed the console, and test drove and still had the rattle. So I know its not the wires or device itself. The dealer... I will skip what they said, I still have the rattle after two visits to them. Any tips on this?

I have a sunroof truck (TRDOR) with 3k miles, the rattle/squeak happens in the cooler parts of the day, this time of year where I live that is the morning hours.
