What are you basing your claim that "that's extremely to long" on, though?

If it's all about warm and fuzzies to you... why not every 1500 miles?

Oil has a lot more engineering than people realize. Most blackstone reports show that people have changed oil far too early, often wasting their money on expensive synthetics just to drain it out.

Oil intervals have gone up on unchanged engines because the oil has always been capable of sustaining longer than 5000miles or 8000kms. The EPA wants manufacturers to be accountable for all emissions.

I always suggest doing the first "early" but lately I trust the oils more and more, and I have stuck to the 1 yr or 10000mi/16000km oil change with 0w20.

To be clear, all Toyota 10,000mi/16000km engines use 0w20 which is a semi synthetic, I do not trust bulk dino oil for that long. The older 5w20 engines are still 5000mi/8000km intervals.

You've still not explained what makes you think that?

For your truck, it's your money, go with what works for you. I'm not saying do different than what makes you happy.

Still, it's much more helpful to the OP if you gave him the reason behind your opinion. For instance, why do you do 5000 miles instead of the old 3000miles/3-months interval that we used to have on everything? What's changed that you're now comfortable going nearly twice the previous recommendation?

When I hit around 5k on my current I may do a change and send it off for analysis. See if Toyota is stretching things or not. My guess is the 10k will be more than fine.

I bought my funcar used a few years back and was surprised at the 15k interval. I did a mid-interval change at nearly 8k and sent a sample to Blackstone. Their analysis was very clear that the oil had TONS of life left. So I've gone with the 15k interval since then, though it usually hits 12 months before it hits 15k miles.

You don't understand oil if you think its "nuts" to go over 5k

Thank you all for your info guys!

I know there is two schools of thought..

    1. I'll do my maintenance because I can and I want to.
    2. I'll put away my feelings and if the oil last more I'll wait.

I am going to see where can I do an oil test to see the facts and put my emotions aside..

Well let's see....the 2TR-FE (4 CYLINDER) one year was 5K OCI, this year its 10K OCI, next year...who knows.....Toyota "care", nahhh......I'm plenty capable of doing it myself,......it will be 5K OCIs for me, don't care what anyone else does.

Here is what I do. I take my truck off the lot and I NEVER take it back to the dealer unless it is a warranty issue. Its just not worth the stress, I'll change the damn oil and rotate the tires, etc. Then I know it is done and done right.

yes, you waited a hour and a half for what is known in the industry as "the sunshine treatment". i also waited the same time just to get it in the records that i brought it in for scheduled service.

2.7l 4speed auto gets an oil change every 5,000 miles. I have synthetic, dealer gave me a printout.
The same exact dealer tried not changing my oil or filter on 5k and 15k oil "service"

    @mikestaco17

All that's being asked of you is very simple.

W/o a lab test of the oil, what is your scientific evidence that it needs changing at 5k?

Do you sniff it? Taste test? Rub it between you fingers for a feel test? Use your chemical xray vision glasses for an exam?

Or are you just pulling a number out of the air because you 'heard' it somewhere? If so, pull some puncuation marks along with those numbers so you can use them too.

And yes, on this topic at least, @JoeCOVA is smarter than you.

But so are the tribologists that Toyota engineers consult with to determine conservative OCIs so Toyota will not have financial losses based on oil related warranty claims.
