Loving the HSA feature with my manual (5-spd).
It adds slightly more control and over the life of the vehicle it'll definitely prolong clutch life a bit.

can anyone explain what happens when it kicks in?
Mines new only got 112km on it. Not sure if this was hill assist or something to be concerned about.

Leaving my grandmothers today (house is on a hill) backed out of the driveway onto the hill (its steep)
as soon as I went from R to drive I heard the truck beep, had some yellow triangle with a ! in it come on, and pushed the throttle.
Didn't get any other message on the dash just beeped then had the yellow light come on for a second. I put my foot back on the brake as soon as I heard it beep not knowing what the fuck was going on, light turned off right away and then I hit the gas and took off. Nothing else happened.

I did notice as soon as I put it in drive it felt like it was about to roll back then just stopped. really was not sure what the hell was going on.
Thought hill assist was only for manuals
mines 2017 TRD off road automatic.
Just not sure if this is something I should be going to the dealer about or normal operation.
Happened so fast had no clue what was going on, and here street is known for dumb fucking cunts flying down the street towards the hill where they can't see you, so its one of those spots always try to get in gear and get going right away.
Seen plenty of accidents there, all the people on here street keep trying to get teh city to put speed bumps in to slow people down.

hard to tell from google maps but ya, its a steep fuckin hill

Nothing on dash on Sport models.

Off road/pro models use their crawl/MTS systems for hill assist functionality and will almost certainly show something alert~y on the dash.

not sure what the hell it was. not sure if its something to go to the dealer about or not as it happened fast didn't see anything else on the dash.
also sounded a bit noisy from the back end.

I'm almost wondering if because it's such a steep hill it set something off.

I'm almost certain that what you heard/saw/felt was normal. Try it again on a steep hill.

gonna go by tomorrow and see if it happens again, also give it a second to get into gear. probably was on the throttle before it was even fully in gear.

My first post as I just got my 2017 TRD Off Road DCSB M/T (Manual) and am thoroughly confused by the features, the manual (book not transmission), and my dealers lack of knowledge. But here is my experience so far even though I'm a little late to these posts.

Test drive 1: 2017 TRD Sport M/T - randomly stopped on a steep hill to see how I could handle the clutch and to my surprise after releasing the brake the vehicle did not roll backwards at all. I did not know this was a feature. I was just in the market for a 4x4 tacoma to replace my 4x4 explorer

Test drive 2: 2017 TRD Off Road A/T - stopped on a steep hill, released brake, truck rolled backwards "slowly" while transmission made "clicking" noises (dealer told me this is normal)

Test drive 3: ordered my 2017 TRD Off Road M/T - stopped in the middle of my steep driveway and when I released the brake it rolled backwards quietly and fast. I was quite surprised. After consulting the manual and the dealer with no clear information I found this site.

I too would like concise explanations from Toyota about the features of my truck. They should be the experts. I shouldn't have to dig for days to piece the info together.

you just described the three levels of hill start assist as has been documented in this thread. All models (except for the OR's and pro's) have what you described in test drive 1. On the Or/PRO autos it works like your test drive 2, and with the MT it is non existent as you have found in test drive 3. it's really not that hard to understand.

Yes I saw some of what I posted throughout the thread. Maybe I read through it too quickly. I thought people were still looking for distinctions between M/T vs A/T, and sport vs offroad package. My dealer led me to believe that the Offroad M/T functions the same as the Sport M/T that I test drove plus the A-TRAC. At first I thought my truck had a broken feature.

It's not my only area of my confusion though. I've been unable to engage in 4 Lo but I found another post that gave me some ideas to try.

Same thing happens on my 4runner which has the same feature. I think if the hill is to steep it is pretty useless, rolling back and doing the same as your post states. It works only on mild hills. I can see this being a very useful thing for a manual tranny on steeper hills but for an auto it's easily held on it's own or with a very small amount of pressure on the skinny pedal.

My hill assist works intermittently. I'm at about 12k and up until my 10k service it worked totally fine MT so it obvious when it's not working. Happens about twice a week now where it just doesn't work at all. I'll mention be it at my 15k

I'm not sure what to conclude about this. My 2016 automatic TRD OR DCSB rolls backwards when stopped and trying to drive forward on a hill, and makes lots of violent noises and shakes. It's pretty startling. What's the deal???
