I have wool shirts, jackets and pants they are awesome in the cold. Filson is top of the line wool gear. I have coats that were my grandfathers, and they are still in great condition. They do hold a bit of water if you get wet, but if you wring them out they still keep you warm. Mine have held up well in brush way better then fleece. IMO you can't go wrong with wool.

Been using Magma stuff for years and love it. Look into the strainer and wok add-ons as they nest right in and only increase the height by about a half inch. Another tip is to get a spare handle for ease of moving around what you have on the cook surface and the prep surface. Plus it's a spare for "ooops" moments.

No idea haha. but I have heard that its slightly flame retardant so it makes sense! Im always just wary of spending $100+ on something that may not be as good as advertised.
That's good to hear! do you get briars that grab and pull little picks up in the wool?

I did look into adding the 3 qt. And suspected getting the spare handle was a good idea. The Wok and the Colander .... Maybe.
Not that one, but, REI had a table on top of a bag. The table assembled above the bag. Easy to set up and use.
BUT .... when cooking you (I) might spill fuel or food and I ended up returning it because if I needed another table I didn't need this one.
I now have bags for stuff, and tables that fold flat.

Just a bunch of old crap
Well, I just sent back my brand new Bearikade Weekender today to exchange it for the slightly smaller Scout. I just don't like a vertical carry of a bear canister in my pack, and the Scout has almost identical dimensions to the BV450, which fits perfect in the horizonal position in my new pack. Allen said he'd exchange it out for me and refund me the difference, so I figured it's worth it.

The furthest I'll have to go between resupplies this summer is 7 days, and the first 2 of those will have access to a bear locker so I can carry some loose food. This year I went 6 days with my Lighter1 (same size as BV500) and I still had 1/3 of my food left over.

In the old days, we climbed, skied and hiked everything you can imagine in wool gear. We (being dirtbags) got a lot of it from Army surplus and used it hard. The old stuff was heavy but tough. Our packs in Alaska and Canada weighed some stupid amounts (long trips, no re-supply). We switched to synthetics when they became stronger, lighter and drier. I still prefer the feel of Merino wool next to my skin for temp management in conditions below 60º F, but like keeping my pack light. Lac de Dix.jpg

I just skimmed the article. It sounds like, if the states get control of the federal lands. Then, they can do what they want with the land. Like sell it to private owners that can close the land off to public use.

Correct me if I'm worry on that.

Basically. States like Wyoming have so much public land that it would be near impossible to manage it properly on a state budget. Therefore it would benefit the state to sell it for oil/gas use (aka private land). Let's be real, the Wyoming bigwigs are not fighting for this so the land can be better managed. They are fighting to benefit themselves.

    Stuff. Also things.
Rob Bishop and his ilk are much the same with Utah's public lands.

I'm not always in favor of monument status to protect an area, as it can have a negative impact on the existing recreational users of the area in question. But I'm sure as hell not interested in the state politicians getting their hands on that land either. Because resource conservation and preservation, including recreation, are the last thing that rich old fucks like Bishop care about.

Another big issue is fire management. If you take the feds and their (our) money out of fire suppression, it will all be allowed to burn. This is ecologically sound, but in states like CO, NM, AZ and CA, the interface of USFS, BLM and private housing means that the houses will not be saved.

That's the risk that that should be assumed by the home owners that live in such areas. They should have insurance for property protection. Location of homes and location is a personal choice. I'm not even close to the high end but I am rural and in the event of a wildfire in my vicinity my home would probably be at high risk for loss. If I cant accept that, I shouldn't live where I do. Nobody's responsibility but mine.

Yeah, the price of having neighbors right next door. Life in the city.
I drive 25 minutes to the closest store.
I might not be able to go if there's snow/ice on the road 'down' the mountain.
I love it, but it's not for everyone.
