Currently building a tailgate tire carrier and will be getting a full size spare to match my current set up 285/75r16 KO2's on 16" FN countersteer wheels. My question does the spare under the bed have a TPMS? I got mixed information looking through previous tacomas generations.

No the spare doesn't have one. I had America's Tire put one in my same size spare for doing a five-tire rotation

Okay my next question I was going to ask... if you have all 5 tires with TPMS can "America's Tire" (Discount Tires in TX) set the 4 on the ground or is the truck capable of reading all 5 at once?

My 08 Tacoma had all 5 but my 15 only has the 4, don't know why they could not program the 5th to work.

So, what's the point of putting a sensor in the spare if the "puter" don't see it..??? Sounds like a waste of $..!

AND... you do a 5 tire rotation...????? WTF... You are not supposed to do that.... Just front/rear... both sides...

and my opinion, is buy a cheap 285 tire and use the regular spare steelie rim, you'll barely use it and you wont see it either.

Who says your not suppose to? Bc toyota says soo... I believe in front to rear and cross rotation (if you have bi-directional tires) but toyota doesn't allow it. Every vehicle I've ever had a full size spare I've thrown them in to the rotation to increase longevity of the tires or else you just pay for a tire that dry rots that will have to eventually replace anyways.

I ask about the TPMS on a full size tire since it will be mounted on a tailgate tire carrier so it will be exposed.

I've done this for years and still do. It makes buying tires a little more but they last longer and the spare isn't dry rotting so when you go to use it it doesn't blow out on you. I've seen that first hand when someone I was wheeling with had to put their factory spare on that was 7 years old and had never seen the pavement.

For said reasons above I do the five-tire rotation and never had an issue doing it.

Computer can only store 4 at a time. Waste of money. You'll put a sensor in it and need to get the dealer or some tire shop to do the swap that has the tool to reprogram. Or just deal with the TPMS light on.

I wondered how many the computer can store. That sucks it can't store them all but there has to be some way to do it. I would think as long as it's near the truck it won't throw a light yiu just won't know what that tire pressure really is.

Not sure. It's accurate enough to know left from right front from back. Figure you put it under or on the back it might not work.

But yep only 4 at a time. And all the things that you can use for older gens don't work on the new ones.

So then when the tires are rotated it's not smart enough to know what tire is where? Isn't that why there is a reset button so that it relearns what tires are where or possibly it does it on it's own after time? I've had my tires rotated twice and after I did they read like they where in the same position as before. I run 2psi higher in the fronts than the rears. Once I reset it they read correctly. I was hoping you could add a TPMS to the spare and it would read it if you added it to the ECU and rotated it in but I guess that's not the case.

Misunderstood, thought you meant have the spare without TPMS and then rotate it and just have one with the TPMS on the tire carrier. That's where I meant it probably won't work since one tire will be on the centre of the vehicle, not in the 'correct' location to the computer.

When you hit the reset it learns where they are yes. But if you have one without a sensor on and then the sensor in the spare location it will probably read out wrong. Might even set off the light. Why not try it with the current spare and see what happens?

I don't know if this helps at all but on my 08 which did have a sensor in the spare, whenever I got a flat tire the light would obviously come on. After I installed the spare the light would flash for a few miles of driving and then go off, my assumption is that the system just needed a few minutes to recognize that sensor.

Ah gotcha I understand what your saying now. It's not smart enough to recognize the spare and that it was rotated in and would thin that the tire in the spare location (under the truck and not on the road) was still in contact with the road. I did misunderstand what you were saying thanks for setting me straight. It must have been the lack of coffee this morning. Hahaha!
