To lift or not to lift?

So...I'll just come out and admit it--I have the mod bug right now.

I just lifted my tundra (camburg coilovers) and it came out great, so well in fact I'm thinking about lifting my taco a few inches and putting on some new wheels/tires (I've got 60K on my current BFGs so its time to replace them). I don't take the taco offroad, but I would like to sit a little higher up. I just feel safer in a taller vehicle. I'm also pretty sick of the stock wheels.

Considering this is my daily street driver, do you think its a bad decision to lift it? I'm currently getting ~19mpg, which is awesome.

If I did a lift it would probably have to be very budget oriented. Something like bilstein 5100s (no fancy coilover kit). I don't know how much life my stock bilsteins have on them left after 5 years.

For you guys that did a budget lift/wheels/tires, what route did you go and are you pleased with your setup? Thanks!

 

If its just for the street how much are you worried about the ride?

 

id say go with the 5100's and an aal in the back, its inexpensive but still a decent quality lift. I have not gotten this set up yet but am going to within the next couple months. match the lift with some 265 75 16 A/T and it should look real good

 

Thats the set up I have now; just add OME885s and that is mine exactly lol. I am about to upgrade to 886's and a set of Allpro leaf packs

 

5100's front and back.Set the front @ .85 (the second setting from the bottom) Nothing in the back. Call it a day.

 

60,180 on the rugged trails, no joke. Just all highway miles. I've only taken the truck off road a handful of times. Maybe 100 miles of offroading.

I'm only looking for maybe 1-2 inches of lift. Nothing too serious. What kind of deals have you guys found on the 5100s? I think I may go that route, if anything just to improve the ride. Is it really noticeable over the stock bilsteins? Do you need an alignment with say the .85 or 1something option, or only when you put the fronts on the 2.5 setting?

Yes on the alignment. The third setting is 1.75"
That was what I had.Much better than the stock yellow/blue Bilsteins.

 

If you go 2.5 up front with the 5100s you'll need UCAs to get the caster back so that it doesn't drive all twitchy following grooves or uneven road surfaces but camber & toe is what wears the tires & that is OK with alignment. Mine are 2.5 with 1.5 AAL in back. Rides great IMO & have LR UCAs going on soon to fix the caster. The problem with 5100s right now might be gettin your hands on some. Seems to be supply issues on those. They can be had but you have to get on a backorder list or just time it right from what I've been reading/hearing. Mine is prerunner and most of my driving is also hwy regretfully but the ride is just fine set that way.


Likin the floor mat on the ground at the campsite & the mt bikes too.

 

From all the posts, lifting 3" and beyond and going to larger heavier tires kicks the crap out of gas mileage.

I'm getting 21 to 22 mpg like clockwork now. I am in the process of getting the upgraded 4 leaf (TSB) rear spring assembly from the dealer. I also bought a set of 5100s to raise the front and level the truck. I'm hoping this will not affect gas mileage. I'll let you know...

I'm really interested to see how this effects your mileage. I assume you've got a v6 like me. I'm leaning to go towards your route right now...5100s all around.

Is the TSB with 4 leafs supposed to be better than the stock leafs on my 2005? Will it lift the rear at all? I'm assuming this TSB doesn't apply to my truck....

Update: I found a killer deal on a set of bfg long trail tires so I bought some and had them mounted yesterday. They are 245/75s and they look just like the stockers except a hair smaller. I will take some pics and compare them to my buddy's truck who still has the 265/70s.

Not trying to hijack this thread, but I too, am looking to go with 5100s soon on my '07 TRD. Is the 4 leaf (TSB) something a dealership will cover hassle free? I haven't been able to locate much about it in searches.

I tried to get the Dealership to swap out but I was passed the 30000. It was going to be a pain in the ass. So I went with OME Dakars. From what I have heard and seen the TSB leafs arnt that much better IMO. They could be for you. I tow and carry weight so thats why I went with the Dakars. They are awesome my rear rides 24" from center axel to bottom of fender. In the front I have OME 884.

Since MPG came up I will mention when I had my stocks 265 70 R16 I averaged 20 mpg HWY. Now with my 265 75 R16 I am getting about 17 to 18 MPG.
