Question about Pro Comps

Just a quick question before i pull the trigger on a set of Pro Comps 7089's.

I've decided i'll be going with a 265/70/17 instead of 285's. With that said i'll be going with 17 x 8, with 4.5" backspacing and 0 offset.

Since i won't be going with a bigger tire, are these appropriate specs? The shop owner i'm dealing with says these rims are non-refundable, non returnable so i definitely want to make sure i get the right ones.

Do i need that much backspacing? Less maybe? Anything else i should consider or know before i purchase?

The 4.5" backspacing will push the whole tire/wheel package out 1" further than they are right now. PLUS, the rim itself is .5" wider. So your whole wheel will be out 1.5" wider than it currently is. This will most likely, put it about 1.25" outside the edge of the fender.

Technically you don't need 4.5" backspacing, but that's 80% of the choices out there in 6 lug wheels. There are 5.71" and a few 5.21" but they are few and far in between. Stock rims are at 5.5" bs which gives you about 1/8" of clearance between the UCA and the sidewall of the tire. The 4.5" give you 1" more clearance in this area.

IMO, an 8" wide rim with a 5" backspacing and +12mm offset would be ideal. I just couldn't find any in a wheel that I liked. For me, it was 18x9, 4.5" bs and -12mm os...

Unfortunately for the rims i wanted i have to settle for the 4.5" backspacing, but that may help down the road should i feel the need to go with even bigger tires.

Also, the shop i bought them from today has told me that i could mount them (without the tire mounted on the rim) and see what they look like. If they stick out to much for my liking i can return them. Sounds like a good deal to me!

 

se7en, are those 8" wheels in your pics? i currently have 16x10 mt with 285/75s on them and the stick out too far. i was about to purchase some 16x8 and put 265/75s on them. will they still stick out as far as in your pics? oh, the new wheels are 4.5 bs and 0 os.

 

I'm running 18x9's with a 4.5" bs. Mine stick out exactly 2.25" past the fender. The 8" ones your wanting will stick out less...maybe not the 1" less that the wheel width indicates, though. This is because the tire is a 285. 285 tires are 11.25" wide (slightly varying from manufacturer to manufacturer) and this won't change. So even though, you're on a 1" narrower wheel, the tire will still be somewhere in the 11" wide range. If I were a betting man, I would bet that your 285's on an 8" wide rim with a 4.5" bs, will stick out anywhere from 1.5" to 1.75" past the fender when all is said and done. When/if you go this route, please post back up so we'll all know.

 

Try and visualize the tire "bulge" when only the wheel is on there. You can expect at least .5" - .75" from the wheel to the outside of the sidewall. Post pics after the install.

 

i just measured the mt 16x10's with the 285's and they stick out about 2.5". FYI, i was planning on getting Helo 791(i think that was the #) 16x8, 4.5 bs, and 0 os. and i was going to put Dayton timberline at 265/75/16s on them. how far do you think they will stick out. i dont mind a little, but tired of the mud throwing im getting now.

 

Let's go back to stock wheels for a second. Stockies are a 5.5" bs wheel. Your 4.5" will push that out an extra 1". The stock width is 7.5" vs your new ones at 8". That's another .5". The 265 tire width is the stock width. So, I'm guessing (and that's all we can do) is that you will stick out about 1 - 1.25" past the fender.

 

that seems logical. maybe tire bulge or baloon will take up most of that. i had a good inch to inch and a half of just tread sticking out on the ones i have now. thanks for all your help, by the way, what does DC stand for in the title of your truck. my 06 looks just like yours. oh, also i have a level kit on my truck, i think its two inchs, will that change anything?

 

se7en, i forgot to mention that i had to go with 4.5bs and 0 0s because other wheels would not fit over my brake calipers. did you run into this? also do you have side pics of your 18s

OP do you have a lift installed? If not, are you planning on installing a lift in the future? If so, I would just stick to the 4.5" BS wheels incase you want to go to a 11.50 or even 12.50 wide tires.

 

Se7en, i really like your truck and those 18's look real good on it! I'll make sure to post pics of the install and such.

 

Thats what i keep thinking. I do plan on lifting the truck in the future, nothing crazy buy something under 3". At least with that kind of backspacing (4.5") i could run a larger tire with no problems. (provided i do a little trimming of course)

 

I would get them for future upgrade purpose.
