DEI DBALL2 Remote Start Install using OEM fob - 2017 Tacoma Push to Start

Alright guys I'm 22, no electrical experience took me about 2 hours taking my sweet ass time going inside and outside and plastidipping my grille while doing this. Successful install... I used the idiots guide because it's literally fool proof LOL

 

Also I suggest putting tape on each wire you have to tap so you don't get confused, worked well for me and after I skinned the wire I took off the tape (used painters tape) and then split the wire in half (still all together, military splice) just took the razor blade and split it and fed the dball wires through, twisted and taped them next to each other, I then taped the harness together so there was no movement and also used the zipties to keep the spiced wires from moving.

I also used your suggestion and did the c29 connector instead and it worked, so less work for me

 

Just installed my remote start - Everything appears to be working and I ended up soldering all the wires which went rather easy.

I do have 2 questions that I noticed from my initial test (tomorrow I will do more).

If I start the car with the remote then I shut it off with the remote, I noticed that I cannot unlock the doors like I normally would by walking up to door and grabbing the handle. I have to unlock the doors with the remote control. If the truck is never started with the remote, everything works like it's supposed to and I can lock and unlock the door via the handle. Did I wire up something wrong or is this the way it's supposed to operate? If I start the truck with the remote I can unlock the door via the handle if the truck is running and then of course the truck shuts off.

The other question, in relation to the above, if I start the car with the remote then I shut it off with the remote I noticed the parking lights stay on - how long do they stay on before shutting off, do they ever shut off on their own (yes I cut the auto light wire and soldered both wires coming from the

dball2 to the white oem wire)? They do shut off if I open the door.

I hadn't even noticed #1 until it was mentioned in another thread. Tried it and sure enough, it wouldn't unlock using the strip after shutting it off via the remote. Guess after remote start, the truck isn't realizing that it has locked back so no reason for the strip to work. As an alternative to using the fob, you can however touch the lock tab on top of the handle and then the strip works fine to unlock.

For #2, be sure you have the headlights in auto. I had it switched to the headlight on position and the lights never shut back off after turning the truck off using the 3x lock.

 

Hmm. I always have the headlight switch on parking lights and never in auto so I'll either have to change my behavior or deal with it

 

Looks like I may actually have a reason to use mine here soon!

300 is just the basic and the 350 adds gps tracking

 

Did you cut the unused connectors from the unit before wrapping them up.

 

Nope that is for real - sunny in WA state. Of course we get sun here in winter, but probably get shite for sun in summer ha ha

 

Can anyone direct me to where I can get a smart start module in Canada? The only link I've found is at Canadian Tire - http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/smartstart-remote-car-starter-0354534p.html but the price seems pretty steep to me.

 

PJ, thank you for this great post. It made the install a breeze - especially for someone that typically has to fumble through auto wiring! Your charts were great and very easy to follow.

Now if I can convince you to put together the same chart for a 2016 Nissan Frontier.... I'd be a superhero to my Wife!

 

Tell her to go buy a tacoma. The frontier doesn't look like it's remote start ready so it's likely to be a giant pain in the rear and require a separate alarm/remote start module.

 

@gpb I thought you had done a alternate termination on the big 12VDC wire on the ECU? Instead of stripping and soldering you removed the pin and connected another way. I can't find that info, maybe it was someone else. Thanks again for the great write up.
