Timing belt/water pump

Where did you all buy the kit for this? I just hit 96k miles and truck feels sluggish, so want to start there.

 

I think someone by the name of aircabinman on E bay or Amazon sells the complete kit. Someone should chime in here in a minute

I used it. Great kit. Would/will buy again. Might buy an extra just in case he goes out of business or something

 

Pretty happy with the numbers at this point. Shop i use only quoted me 180 for labor. Was on the fence if I needed to do this right now, but for under 500 I might as well.

 

IMO and particularly for this job - I take it to the Dealer and have all OEM put in it. If you can do it yourself get the OEM stuff as well. That ebay kit is a really good deal.

 

$180 seems low for a tb job. if they're going to do it, and do it well for that price, that's awesome. i'd be a bit skeptical though.

 

Toyota dealer quoted 4.5 hours labor, my shop only charges 40/hr. I had him put my entire lift in and he only hit me for 100$ cash. If I catch him on a slow day he is even better about it.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but I'm coming up on 72,000 miles on my 2003 Tacoma. I think the recommended timing belt change is at 80,000 so do you think I should jump on the bandwagon and but this kit as well?

Although a certain Inferno Red 2017 Tacoma has caught my eye...

 

This is the exact kit I just installed. Comes with all the gaskets, belts, seals, water pump, etc... you need to do the job. If you're fairly handy with a wrench and don't have little kids distracting you (like I did), it should take a full day, maybe a weekend to complete.

Shop quoted me $900 for the whole job, I did it myself for under $350 including new coolant, steel for the crank pulley tool, etc...

Check out the "home made crank pulley tool" sticky for how to make the tool you'll need to put the crank pulley back on.

One piece of advice to make it a little easier, is when you go to re-install the new belt, use a couple adjustable clamps to hold the timing belt on to the cams and crank as you get everything lined up before installing the tensioner. My belt kept slipping around and slipping a tooth, so the clamps held everything in place.

 

I change mine every 90,000 miles. It's up to you if you think you need to buy it now or wait till your mileage is a little bit higher.

 

we didn't do the timing belt in our 97 until 200k miles... at 350k miles she is still running strong. didn't do the timing belt on my 03 double cab until 130k miles.
