I had a job once as a union laborer.

We were called to the Muncie, Indiana wastewater treatment plant. Typically, we worked on the roads, replacing the culvert pipes on interstates that had collapsed. So, my thoughts about the wastewater plant were that we would be replacing piping, or railing along the walkways.

    Nope.

Lead: "Boys, we're gonna be gettin' down in that hole, so you're gonna have to be tied off.".

Fellow co-worker/thoughts in my own head: "Wait...wut? What do we need to go down in there for?"

Lead: "Well fellers, we bid on this job and won, so they want us to get down in there, in the perimeter ring, and stir up all the shit with shovels while one of you sucks it out with a vac truck."

Me: "Dibs on vac truck ops."

    Lead: "That's my job."

    Me: "Dammit.".

Fellow co-worker: ::vomits profusely:: "oh God, oh God, I dunno man....I dunno."

Me: "Look, lets get this shit done, it'll only take us a day."

Lead: "We also have another tank, that is underground that we have to clean out. Its a holding tank. "

    Me: "Dammit."

We got in there, and sucked all the shit out. Rats the size of house cats. That vac truck was a bad mother fucker. It'd suck those rats up like they were mice. The hose would shake violently, and when the rat would hit the back of the vac tank, it would ring like a bell. Condoms EVERYWHERE. Tampons, pads....all of it. Anything that had been flushed down a toilet....it was there. We got it all clean. The next day, the sandblasting crew showed up. They had to sandblast the walls.....

That was the hardest $29.17 an hour I've ever worked for. I just kept telling myself it was dirt/mud. We had masks on, no respirators, but masks. It blocked the smell enough.

Then came the worst news. The first tank needed all of the filter media sucked out as well. Basically the sewage fed in to an inside tank with filter media. It would then soak through the floor and go out into the border where we first worked. So now, not only did we suck up all the liquid shit/piss and whatnot. We had to get INTO the filter media and suck it all out.

My co-worker puked about 10 times a day. Lunch time was a bitch, because you'd have to basically shower with acid to get the smell off your hands so you could eat your sammich. I never could get the smell out of my Carhardt overalls. I had to toss em.

The only positive aspect was that it was in February, when its really cold so the stench wasn't so bad.

I just loaded up on dip. lol.

Put about a fist full in and couldn't smell anything but.

I was desperate fellas. I worked that job during the week. I lived 1hr 40mins from the shop and we had to be ON SITE at sun up, and didn't leave until sun down. On the weekends I worked at Belden, which some here may be familiar with as they produce wire for contractors. I worked there on the weekends 12hrs on Sat, 12hrs on Sun.

Saved my cash and paid for my truck. (Bought my 2001 Taco in 2006 for $13,500 with cash) and paid for my first apartment for two years.
