I HATE the road ride of my Sport!!

Try putting weight in the bed that will preload the suspension and maybe smooth it out for you. Edit: The rest of you guys go fuck yourselves.

 

If your'e not looking to lift it, swap out the shocks with the OR 4600's. My TRD OR 4x4 rides like butter. Some may say it's to spongy but I think it rides soft and better riding then my wives Camry. I'm not sure that's all that's different with the suspension (sway bar) but maybe someone else can chime in. If I had to pick one thing that is true with the OR, it's that it does rock from side to side a little too much at times but I can live with that. $.02

 

Or be smart and upgrade to a 1st Gen.

 

My sport rides great for a truck. On par with other trucks I have ridden in. I would agree that there is either something wrong or you are overly sensitive or were expecting too much.

Aren't the 5160/6112 stiffer to take more offroad abuse. I cant find a dyno curve, but I think "Digressive Valving" more or less has a stiffer low speed initial damping, and then less damping with larger faster hits.

Sport has a larger roll bar, which will stiffen up hits on one wheel up front.

 

0% chance the bilstein 6112/5160 is stiffer. i purchased them for ride comfort because like OP i thought the ride was totally shitty in a stock sport. the combination of very heavy springs and very shitty hitachi shocks did not do well over bridges and railroad tracks. even with my fronts on the 4th clip and aal in back the ride on my truck is soooo much better than stock.

 

In OP's defense, there are those who like myself buy without doing a test drive because we know what we want an accept what we get, so I'm pretty sure he falls into the same category. He has accepted what he has but is just looking for HELP from TW so he can love his truck like we all do. Isn't TW what this forum is all about, helping one another? even when mistakes are made? I knew I did not want the hood scoop so got the OR, I'd take a guess that he liked that Scoop look but not the ride, so lets help him keep the look but improve his ride. $.02

Yeah, stiffer in the right places. Good road manners and when the damper movement increases, it gets more compliant.

 

It's easy to get wrapped up in the shopping experience and miss something important like tracking down the exact truck you need to test drive. Or to think the one you will buy should be close enough to the one you drove, etc... The way I see it you only have 2 options if you hate it that much:

1. Keep tinkering with the suspension. You might have to replace more than just the shocks though...
2. Trade that sucker in for an OR with a softer suspension.

 

"Good road manners" though, means a stiffer ride for better street performance. So my point is that it was likely the wrong way to go for the OP, as he is looking for a plush ride. I'm agreeing with others, that the OEM OR shocks might have the decreased damping he is after.

 

Never said it wasn't plush. It reacts quickly, so I actually do not feel the same bumps at speed vs. the factory. It's not "stiffer" as you think. I think a more controlled damping motion is achieved without the harsh feel is a better way to describe it.
The sport Hitachi's just feel like a cheap gas charged damper. The factory dampers I pulled were similar. The weight on each corner of the truck increased by at least 2.5 times after the component swap. There's more in these damper units than just "more metal". They work even without the application being specific for the 3rd Gen. I got them a week before specific application release for the 5100's, and got an earful from Bilstein tech center telling me not to use them. LOL.... The front springs are 600 lb rated and longer than the factory I believe.

If you have this exact combination, please post from your experience.... Tires and suspension work as a combo. Some guys are so smart, they forget to adjust or experiment with air pressure and comment based on their "expertise".

 

I have gone from 34-40psi and back down to try and get a better ride. Im not looking for a plush ride, but as you said, just something better than stock. I regret not going with the OR to begin with but my mistake is now a huge pain as I love to go off road but do quite a bit of city/hwy driving.

 

There are tires with different sidewall stiffness too, if you're willing to try. Do some research on it, you'd be surprised. There's always that trade off for durability vs. ride comfort though.

 

Hey Avitaco I felt the same way when I got my TRDSport, I though my 200.000K miles Ford Focus rode better than the truck.

I start some digging about suspension and tires and decided to do the whole thing, after adding some KO2's the road ride got much better, Im even
thinking about leaving the suspension alone for a wile.

I agree. The sport ride could be better. I plan on installing 3rd gen 5100's all around just as soon as I'm finished fighting with Toyota over the rumble strip problem I am feeling during braking they so far refuse to acknowledge.

 

Change out to the Pro suspension, mine rides like a dream.
