Auto LSD feature

I have a 2010 TRD Off Road and they have this Auto LSD feature that scared the crap out of me when I drove it the other day in the snow and it started to spin some tires and this thing kicked in. Anyone explain this feature in normal words other than what the dealership attempted to do? It made some grinding noise and beeps and the dealership said that is what it is suppose to do. Had a 2006 and it did not have this feature. Thanks

 

that is the stability control kicking in. imo it works awesome. it kicks in when the tires are slidding. it is designed to straighten you up. each tire brakes seperatly.

 

I am still reading up on the strategy of this feature, so I will leave room for better understanding. It is more than just Auto LSD.

The truck you have (same as me) also has some stability and traction features that can kick in. When wheel slip is detected on any wheel, it can actually perform and ABS apply to that wheel. That is the "grinding" that you are hearing. It is the brake actuator and release solenoids turning on and off while the ABS pump runs to provide pressure. This can apply and release the brakes quickly to the slipping wheels which will transfer the torque to the wheels that still show traction (not slipping). It is not really "grinding" but a buzzing of the solenoids which can turn on and off MANY times a second.

I was playing with mine and found that while accelerating in a turn on slippery surfaces the system tries to keep the truck in a controlled "power slide". I had a momentary feeling of being fast and furious

The beeping is feedback for the driver that vehicle stability and traction are abnormal so that you can also back out of the throttle to maintain control.

It works exactly as it is supposed to. Mine got tested last night and again this morning on the way to work. Where I used to have to use 4WD on my 1st Gen, I can stay in 2WD and have very good control! Of the 5 toyota trucks I've owned, this one has the best 2WD traction of any.

Just make sure you turn it off if you are screwing around. Otherwise you will munch your brakes.

 

So am I missing something? Are you talking about LSD (limited slip differencial) or VSC (vehicle stability control)?

I'm thinking my 07 TRD Sport has LSD and I can't turn it off. It does not, however, have VSC which (if I knew about when I went looking for my first Tacoma I would have bought) can be turned off with a dash mounted switch.

 

You do not have the same set up as us with '09+ trucks. Our trucks no longer have a true LSD in the differential. They have open differentials that rely on the brakes to simulate an LSB. The problem is, if you don;t turn it off and you go out an pwer slide in a snowy pakinglot it is working the brakes pretty hard in either the VSA or LSB modes. If it is turned completely off you don't have to worry about extra wear on the brakes.

Mark (and any others): If you have 4WD, why are to refusing to engage it, and instead make 2WD (with AUTO LSD) work so hard? You will have less breakdowns if you use the 4WD and let TRAC and A-TRAC take you anywhere without having to push the limits of the 2WD systems. Speed will break things.

 

Actually, that thread is more for the non-TRD Off Road 4WD Tacomas that don't have A-TRAC and want LSD when in L4... so they do the yellow wire mod. to give them TRAC in L4.
