Hey whats up guys? New member here looking for some advice. Im really interested in buying this 2004 tacoma 4 door full extended cab with sr5 and trd packages. The truck has 144k on it and the seller is asking 10k but is a bit negotiable. Is there anything to look out for with this truck @ this age and mileage? I plan on bringing it to my mechanic to see if he spots anything. This is the craigslist link. http://longisland.craigslist.org/cto/5962122245.html

    Thanks in advance!!

Check the frame for rust. That's a great price if everything checks out.

No. TRD is different than a limited. TRD comes with a rear differential locker. Limiteds don't. I think limiteds just have better seats I believe.

I have a sr5, trd, limited model. Has better seats, leather wrapped steering wheel, and color matched fender flares and bumpers. I also have the rear e locker

If that things been in New York its whole life, you really need to check it over for frame rust. Get under there with a hammer and beat on it, especially around the leaf spring mounts and crossmembers.

If it's mostly rust free and everything else works, that's a good deal. Jump on it.

Ok seller didnt know if it was a limited either, i met up with him today hes selling it for his father but his father wasnt present. He said his fathers 70 years old but hes 20 n hes got a sister thats 48 lolwut. He said his dad just bought a new tundra. Kid really didnt know a lot about the truck or much of anything for that matter so i kinda want to speak to the father about the truck. I asked if his dad did his own oil changes he said no and that he (the son) doesnt even know how to do one in general lol. Gotta dig more info out for this one.

Yikes. Sounds like a mess. Hopefully everything is good. They may not realized this is hugely underpriced.

Was told his dad is the second owner. Heavy paint loss from leg drag under drive door, Clear coat failure on roof, front passenger quarter, rear driver side door noticed one ding and a few deep scratches. It was night time when i looked at it but had a great flash light but def need to get a nice look at it to factor that into my offer

    Not all TRD
I see in the ad that it is a v6. But remember...not all 01-04 TRD doublecabs had a push button locker.

You need to confirm that the owner followed through with the required frame undercoating by a Toyota dealer. This would have been in 2011 or so. Without it you have no extended warranty on the frame (15 years from original sale date) for rust perforation. Two of my Tacomas came from Long Island, and the frames on both failed. I'd be very leery to buy it otherwise. If it was, and you buy it, take it to a Toyota dealer and have the frame inspected. Don't put it off either. You need to know its condition and that you are covered just in case.

I think he said his dad has owned it for 2 years now. I will ask if they know of anything about that or if they have any contact info for the original owner (if they truely are the 2nd owners like they say they are). Hes suppose to provide me with the vin tonight so maybe ill buy the carfax report. If this undercoating treatment was done by the dealer would this be on the report?

If i go to a toyota dealer would they happen to have info on if this truck was recoated in their database? May be a silly question but im trying to get as much useful info as possible before i decide to put down a deposit or set an appointment with my mechanic.

Not sure about it showing up on carfax.
Dealer should be able to look it up. If not a call to Toyota hq would answer that.

I believe sr5 and limited in first gens is an interior package. So it can be a TRD and a limited/sr5

When you have the VIN, go to the Toyota Owner website and register it. You will see the the Toyota service records. You will be looking for frame undercoating under maintenance service campaign. Has to say "corrosion protectant applied" or similar wording. Dealers will write it up differently. Your dealer will have all the records of Toyota service for this vehicle. Carfax will have those, and non-toyota service records. Doesn't hurt to have both.

Edit: Since they have only owned it for two years, they may not know anything about the undercoating. But you need to know about it. It's your money, protect it.

    Me neither.

If it has the locker and the frame is in great shape, get it. Be sure to have a mechanic check it out but these little trucks are the best thing going for compact trucks.

    Sexy, reliable and sexy.

    Good Luck
