And that would be perfect, put it around 2500 rpm at 75mph. Give the truck a little balls

A lot of people tend to look at just the final drive, or just the transmission gearing, or talk about changing the tire size, etc. Something that not enough people do is look at the entire picture, and that is to take into account, for each gear, the transmission gearing, the final drive, and the tire size and combine them all into a single number that you can now compare between different trim levels, vehicles even.

Here are the overall ratios for the 2016-17 Tacoma V6 A/T and M/T. Notice that 2nd, 3rd and 4th gears are almost identical, while 1st, 5th and 6th are where the differences all lie, with the 6MT shorter than the 6AT.

Now take a look at the 6AT with 4.88's and stock tires:

This is what the OP was asking about:

Finally, OP's tire size suggestion with 4.88's:

No insanity in really any of these options, I don't think. Even without changing tire size, 4.88's in the 6AT still have a taller 6th gear than the 6MT stock.

That's a good explanation thanks. The 6MT must get really shitty gas mileage from the looks of the gearing. But I bet it's a got plenty of power

Can't we get Yukon 4.88 gears for the sport since I believe it has the same front and rear diffs from the 2nd gen? Only the off-road changed the rear end to the 8.75. Someone wanna chime in?

I'm not sure that regearing to 4.88's and putting 285's on will prevent that; You're still going to be pushing the truck along in 6th going down the highway. The revs will be a little bit higher, but you'll be pushing larger, heavier tires with more rolling resistance, which means that when you hit a hill the transmission is still going to downshift into a more efficient gear. I'm just not certain if the extra rev count will be enough to keep it from kicking down one. It would be too bad if you put that effort in and it didn't resolve your issue.

Of course, a mild lift and 285's will look badass, so there's that to consider too. :notsure:

    Jeff,

The above part numbers are for the 4.30 ratio?

Also you mention a Toyota 4.56, is this available in the 8.75" rear dif size?

Yes, those are 4.30:1 ratio gear sets.

I believe the 4.56 is available in the 8.8 size as well, but I would need to check into it.

If you get a chance to check that would be awesome. 4.56 seems about perfect for 255/80r17 tires.

I don't think you're going to find a OEM Toyota gear for the 8.75" in a 4.56 ratio because it is not in anything. What vehicle would have a 456 ratio with that rear axle?

    4.56:1 Rear 8.8: 41201-09C10

Exactly the reason why the of-cited "automatics have gotten so good these days they beat manuals for mpgs" is usually so, so, so wrong. I remember the old days when you could factory order cars one option at a time and pretty much any gears you wanted. Course they only had like 3 gears to change out anyways.

Is that for the E-locking version? Or do they not make that?
