Made a little magic happen. Built the other side door but joined them with the side panel over the front panel, this making it 1/4" too short.

It's a pain trying to nail it with 18 gauge 1" nails and not have them deflect out the side.

While I was working on that last night, I decided it was time to work on making the topper great again.

I saw a picture of someone who had replaced their side window with a sheet of metal to be able to use it as an area for storage, inside and out.

Picked up a sheet of metal today (wanted aluminum but the price was cray cray). Went with maybe a size under 1/8" steel. The whole panel should weigh under 15 pounds so its not too bad.

So... as usual, starting another project before this one is done. Thought about templating the window again (I did it long ago) so I could get the metal cut to size, but decided to do some painting after work. Now its second dinner time and searching for a dash cam replacement since mine decided to suddenly not be able to see SD cards.

Wish I would have saw you were looking for aluminum earlier, I would have tried to talk you into HDPE, stuff is great to work with, would have been easy to make a panel for the window

It's not too late... The metal can be used for plenty other stuff.

Biggest thing is that I'll need something 16"x51" ... Which is larger than most regular 4' sheets.

I found professional plastics listed off i70 that should have stuff. May have to go over there if traffic isn't a nightmare by the time I have free time.

They only list 1/4" as the minimum thickness for what i selected on the website. Do you think 1/8" would be sturdy enough if i could find it?

I also ordered AAL's for my Dakar pack, and my dash cam stopped recognizing any sd cards so i ordered a new better camera along with a hardwire kit.

Facebook just reminded me that 5 years ago today, i was at a dark time in my life. Driving a Silverado, picked up a hooligan car... Just kidding, both vehicles were great!

    FB_IMG_1485009469870.jpg

Bought it sight unseen from Baltimore, flew up and drove it back to Florida. Imagine my surprise when the plane starts cutting through the clouds up there and the ground was covered in a foreign powdery white substance that I hadn't driven on. We survived though!

AAL, new dash cam should arrive tomorrow. Just in time for the cold to also be here.

When changing the switch from 2wd to 4hi, its been taking a while lately... which I have been told is a sticky actuator... which is just fantastic.

May have to swing by the dealer tomorrow since it should be covered until 36k, and I have 35k. But I can already hear it "we cant duplicate the problem." We wont document it either. Or if they can, I'll get the standard, "Thats just how Tacomas are built". :anonymous:

AAL was delivered... One of two. The second one is lost, FedEx is trying to locate it in their fancy named junk drawer. Last seen in Henderson, CO if anyone sees one on the side of the road... It's mine.

Dash cam mostly installed. Now waiting on a mount that'll connect to the rear view mirror so it's hidden from my view.

Looked into the hdpe, they said they didn't have it in 1/8" and i think 1/4" will be too thick. They offered up lexan and/or acrylic but i don't think I'd trust that for the abuse it'll see. Metal it is...

I would have gone with the Lexan as an alternative myself, good enough for race car windows and the Mythbusters

Yeah... I was just worried about keeping it thin enough, but then worried about it cracking if I mount stuff to it. And the metal isn't adding as much weight as I was worried it was originally going to.

My luck with Amazon is back in effect. No word from FedEx... no idea how long the seller is going to wait to replace the lost product, or if they will.

The second hardwired camera adapter gets power, but it does not fully seat into the camera, theres nothing on the outside physically blocking it, its something with the connector. It works if I hold it in. So I get to purchase a third one and hope it works. :frusty:
