Found a good 3RZ wiki page with global Toyota recommendations and specs. Again, check out the viscosities Toyota uses in other parts of the world where the EPA doesn't mandate a minimum gas mileage requirement as they do here. If you see a viscosity here that is not in your 'dummy manual(owner's manual), it's for a reason. These non regulated oil viscosity recommendations are what Toyota would use without mpg requirements implemented by governments, which means they are in best interest of longevity and performance of engine, not achieving a certain mpg.

Edit: I just noticed the 2.7L 3RZ is built in Japan at the Kamigo plant, while the 3.4L 5VZ is built in Alabama. I'll be just fine with my 'little' 2.7L.

Exactly my same feelings brother. Too funny, quicksand was my second favorite color. And I also love the first gen most. I think what it boils down to for me is that I like my truck to feel like a truck. Just my preference. Also, this may sound ridiculous to some, I feel like I am more in tune with it as well. The new ones are great, just my opinion is that it 'feels' like less of a truck. But I know they aren't less.

 

99 2.7l owner here, FWIW I've been running Amsoil 15w40 and Toyota filters in mine since I got it in 2003. The First owner was running Schaffer's Premium syn 7000 series. I just rolled 400K on the original engine with no rebuild. Just valve adjustments/check at regular intervals. Runs like a top. We have crappy gas out here too with less detergent and ethanol content than most places.

 

Omg, you're running an oil weight not specified in the owners manual!! just messing, of course. I ran Mobil 1, 0w-40 for 7k miles on my last OCI. I had a sample from the oil change analyzed. The TBN measured from sample still showed at 4.3 from a starting count of 12.6. All wear metals looked excellent. As well as water and coolant. 190k on this engine. Looks like if I stick with the Mobil 1 0w-40, I'd be fine to go 8k or 9k on the next OCI. I heart high quality synthetics.

 

I run 10-30 Amsoil Signature in my 2004 2.7 at 7500 mile intervals. Just had an analysis done on the last oil change. Blackstone said the sample was so good I could add 2000 miles the next go around. I'm sticking with 7500 for the time being. I heard what sounded like piston slap back when I first got it with 120,000 miles on it. If only for a millisecond. On a 70 degree day. I switched to the 10-30 back then. Haven't heard it since. I moved since then as well and lately it has gotten down to 20 below, without wind chill. Yep it cranks over pretty slow at -20 but it starts. Full synthetics are FAR better in the extreme cold than dino and if I was running dino I'd damn sure be running a 5-30 or even a 0-30. I installed a battery heater and am kicking myself for not installing an oil pan heater last summer. It's sitting here right now but I'm not going out there and laying on my back to install it in this cold.. That's OK. I'm becoming a pussy as I get older. It'll make it through this winter just like it did the last one and I didn't have the battery heater last winter.
I also run Amsoil 75-110 gear oil in the diffs instead of the 75-90. I forget what I have in the 5-speed tranny and transfer case but it's what Amsoil recommends. Nothing heavier as in the engine and diffs. The specifications for Amsoil 5-30 opposed to the 10-30 are 3 degrees when it comes to cold pour point. That's at somewhere down around 40 below or it might even be around 50 below so there really is no difference to speak of and thicker oil can help with the piston slap that so many new engines have. I never here it anymore.
The thin oil scam is all about CAFE standards which have cost us billions and lost lives since they started them. The oil weight should be chosen based on the temperature and the use of the vehicle. Not fuel mileage. If I lived down south where the temp hit 100+ in the summer and I was in mountainous terrain I'd be using a 0-40, a 5-40 or the 10-30 I'm using now. When my engine passes 200 or 250,000 I'll probably switch to 0-40.
Where I live there's a mountain in every direction and climbing those on a regular basis puts more wear on the engine and drive train so I use heavier oils even with the low temps all winter long. Where it gets hot it's even more important but to each their own. These are just my opinions.

 

That Mobil 1 is real good stuff. I ran it for 18 years in a '73 Cadillac Coupe DeVille which was my only car until I got this Taco. The Caddy was the best damn car I ever owned and drove the shit out of it all over the country at very high rates of speed. Life's circumstances forced me to give it away to a guy who loved it as much as I did. Yep, I "gave" it to him. It was starting to need a whole lot of work I didn't have the time or money to deal with. I miss it. There is nothing like one of those old 70's land yachts. Nothing drives like one of those. Nothing sounds like one of those. Nothing in this day and age can even compete with one of those. Nothing in this day and age even comes close to "feeling" like one of those when you're driving it a 100 mph. They do require a whole lot more maintenance than this new stuff though and they do suck the fuel.

 

Can the Tacoma2.7 with the vvt run thicker oils? I've been running 10w30 and it seems to like it, would 10w40 be ok? I'm almost at 300k

Only thing I have ran is 5w-30 mobil1 synthetic on my 3rz and 5vzfe engine. If running a thinner fluid would give me better mpg then i might switch
