New AR15

So I shot my new Colt today. 10.3 inch bbl

In a couple of days my Aimpoint M3 should arrive so I'll swap that and a BUIS for the carry handle. Next comes the foregrip and flashlight. Fun times.

 

Looks good.

With the short distance between the open sights on that gun the Aimpoint M3 should make a big difference in your groups. Happy shooting!!

I am usually not much of an AR pistol fan but the gun looks like a blast to shot. I got my last AR-15 upper from RRA and it took them almost 7 months to build it for me....and that was a 20" barrel. I am willing to bet the wait for one of their new AR Pistols is probably close to 1 year.

Damn I love that thing. I have been thinking about doing a pistol build, especially since I cannot have a SBR here, but I hate the original RRA long buffertube hanging out the back of the pistols. I like the bushmaster style pistols with the shorter buffer tube or even the Olympic arms pistol.

Let me share a find with you guys, decent red dot optics for a great price. There were a few reviews from AR15.com and they mostly all positive, very quality product. Mostly aimpoint clones.

oh, i didnt know there was a minumum length. Ive seen all the 11.5" barrels from LMT but I didnt realize you couldnt get them

 

Cause the ATF says rifle barrles have to be a minimum of 16 inches. If one were to obtain a class 3 weapons license though, you can get away with a lot more.

 

Varies by State, but you need a permit and to register with the ATF to get a short barreled rifle, (under 16"). Same with silencers.

And forget about it in Cali...

 

Yeah I have a 16" barrel and I believe they said thats the shortest you can go to stay legal.

 

Same here in SC, all you have to do is the paperwork and buy a $200 tax stamp to have a barrel under 16". I plan to do it soon, have one with a 8" barrel (just keep the buttstock off to keep it legal though). Without the buttstock it is considered and registered as a pistol.

You'd have to register for a permit to manufacture an AOW (any other weapon). A shotgun doesn't just "become a pistol" because its got a pistol grip...I believe the magic overall length is like 26 inches or so with a minimum of an 18 inch barrel. Under that and its an AOW. Don't quote me on the numbers, but I know its around there.

 

I know when My grandpa worked at a gun store they sold shotguns with pistol grips and you had to be 21 to buy them, B/C they were classified as pistols. That is in TX and I dont know about other states. Im gonna do some looking around and see if I can find a minimun barrel length for them.

 

Under the National Firearms Act (NFA) it is illegal for a private citizen to possess a sawed-off modern smokeless powder shotgun (a barrel length less than 18 in. or 46 cm and an overall length less than 26 inches) without a tax-stamped permit from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, which requires a background check and a $200.00 fee for every transfer. However, if the weapon was manufactured by a licensed builder, with a short barrel and no stock, the transfer fee is $5. (Short-barreled muzzleloading blackpowder shotguns, in contrast, are not illegal by federal law and require no tax-stamped permit, although they may be illegal under state law.) As with all NFA regulated firearms, a new tax stamp must be purchased before every transfer. Inter-state transfers must be facilitated through a Class III Federal Firearms Licensed (FFL) dealer while intrastate transfers may be between two persons.

 

As long as you are using a AR-15 lower that is specifically stamped "AR-15 Pistol" you should be able to own it legally in most states. When you try to use an AR-15 lower receiver that is not specifically stamped "AR-15 Pistol" is when you can run into legal problems with the firearm.

It all comes down to the serial number - guns that are stamped "AR-15 Pistol" have been registered by the manufacturer as a pistol- and most states don't have "minimum lengths" on pistol barrels (however they may have limits on magazine capacity). Guns that have no "Pistol" stamp on their lower receiver were registered as Rifles by the manufacturer- and nearly every state has laws about how short a rifle barrel is allowed to be.

Nice SBR. I'd love to own one of those here in Cali. Unfortunately, we're limited to 16" min. barrels, in addition to other restrictions (capacity, drop mags using a tool, etc).
