Leer Cap Window Leaking

Does anyone have a problem with the front removable window in their Leer cap leaking water? It only seems to really leak when I go through the car wash, but along wit the water, I also get the soapy mess leaking into my bed area. The weather stripping seams to be ok (Not damaged), just not tight enough.

 

NY Taco, just picked up my new Leer 100R with the removable front window yesterday. The Leer dealer warned me that leakage could be a problem with these front removable windows and that Leer will make good on fixing it if it occurs. I have taken the window out and it's somewhat tricky to put back in and seat properly. It must seat tightly. Fortunately, I'm not going to have to go through removing it frequently. BTW, they told me NOT to go through the car wash for 90 days to protect the paint job (the paint has to season). I'd bring it back to the dealer and make sure the window frame isn't warped? I removed the window today and noticed that where it is leaking, the weather strip did not adhere to the frame. The weather strip doesn't look that great (quality) to start with, so I just might replace it with a better weather stripping once the weather warms up here.

 

All three windows on my Leer leaked from the factory. Stuff in weatherproofing and sealant - as much as you can fit.

 

FYI, yesterday I removed the weatherstripping that Leer installed on my front removable window. The stripping was barely attached, pulled off in one piece with a very light pull. I replaced it with weatherstripping from Home Depot and it seals really tight now. Now I just need to wait for rain to see if it seals properly.

Window isn't leaking anymore, but the two front corners and both sides about 1/2 down the rails toward the tailgate still do.

 

Where did your front window have weatherstripping installed? Mine had nothing - just the frame of the window sitting in channels for that window - no weatherstripping anywhere. I did add some foam-type stripping in the channel, which seemed to have helped.

I initially filled those two corners with butyl-based asphalt sealant from Home Depot, but that's really tough to get into all empty spaces, and mine is leaking. This stuff expands, so I think it'll be much easier to get a good seal with it.

The weatherstripping was installed along the front edge of the frame that the window presses against when closed. I'll try to get a picture of it tomorrow.

As for the front corners, I have tried caulk, the Great Stuff, plumbers putty and nothing had worked. Working on it tonight and tomorrow, so I'll keep you posted.

 

I think I can picture what you mean, but a photo would be awesome!

The asphalt sealant works well, but it's very, very hard to get complete coverage with it. I think that tonight I'll redo the corners w/ the expanding stuff I linked. Just tried it out on a piece of cardboard and it expands quite well, and is black, to boot. Very porous stuff, but I don't think that should be a problem.

 

Let me know how it works for you. After I used it, the problem was improved, but water still came through.

 

You used the same stuff? Maybe I bought this based on you posting a link to it in another thread, hah. Will update once I use it and run through a car wash in a week or so.

 

Guys it's not only the drop window, I recently installed a ARE z series 2 months ago and it leaks like crazy. I've been back to the dealer 3 times and they said the cab side bed rail cap allows water to flow in. The next step is to take shell off and remove rail to lay a bead of silicone across the whole rail. Not sure if this is the answer but it's the first step. I have a carpeted shell and it gets completely soaked along both sides of the bed rails. Frustrating!!

 

I also bought it because of another members post, possibly the same one!

 

I'm pulling my cap tonight to look at the front rail and the side leaks (my carpet also gets wet). I'll let you know what I find.

 

The dealer did a water test with the hose running down between cab and shell mostly on the drop down window and it was running through the rail into the bed. I just can't imagine if that's the only spot since the carpet is wet but who knows. I saw another thread where a guy made a flap to direct water away from the drop down window. Looked like a giant mud flap. I'll try to find it and post. Hey nytaco where in Rochester are you. Just noticed that and I'm there as well.

I pulled the rail and caulked the bottom of it before reinstalling it. Earlier to day I caulked it's front edge seam, so hopefully the front rail problem is fixed. I'll know tomorrow when I hose it down.

When I removed my cap for the fourth re-installation (first three being done by the CapIt dealer) due to leaks, I actually removed the front head rail and spun it around 180 degrees. Can't recall exactly why, but it made sense from a water-proofing perspective. Prior to that, I had removed the end caps from that rail, and very thoroughly sealed both at re-installation so that no water would get inside the rail.

I also applied tons of sealant under the rail before re-installing it.
